Baking bread is a creative expression that many cultures have passed down over generations. Its a seemingly simple act that can bring people together to enjoy a meal, share their traditions and their stories. But can it be a career?

We witness so much passion from people that have perhaps become bakers later in their working life - career movers - or those that have worked in hospitality for years and found themselves drawn towards bread and baking.

However it should be an aspirational career for everyone - no matter their age, background, or even their experience or skill level.

What makes a successful baker? Patience, attention to detail, working well with your hands and being resilient (not every loaf is successful, after all). Add to that entrepreneurship, communications, financial acumen and pure dedication if you want to start your own business. That might sound like a lot but many people thrive in their own Real Bread business - and we want you to meet them!

On Tuesday 20 February 2024, Roots to Work and the Real Bread Campaign are hosting a gathering of current and would-be professional Real Bread bakers at Today Bread in Walthamstow, East London for a networking event.

The evening will begin with a welcome and introduction to Today Bread from owner Alexandre Bettler. Followed by short talks by:

  • Leo Maxlhaieie owner/head baker of Leo the Baker in Sevenoaks, Kent.
  • Jackie McKinson, owner/head baker of Aries Bakehouse in Brixton.
  • Eddy Sleiman, Real Bread Campaign ambassador and owner/head baker of Ed Baker in Lewisham.

There will be plenty of opportunity to network and, of course, nibble on some Real Bread; do bring some to share - we'll provide the soup!

If you're already working in Real Bread, wanting to hone your skills or just find out more - this is where you want to be.
