Job description

Main purpose of job

To manage and develop the Fold’s Market Garden production and personnel in an effective, well organised way, such that the soil becomes increasingly fertile and alive, and it becomes a thriving exemplar of organic market gardening, serving and fulfilling the Fold’s Mission as stated in the Fold 2030.

Principle duties and responsibilities


  • To manage and participate in all areas of production, from propagation through to harvest
  • To develop compost and soil improvement techniques, monitor irrigation, ventilation, pest and disease management
  • To review and plan, cropping, rotations and harvests
  • To manage the flock of around 60 hens
  • To maintain the growing spaces, equipment, facilities, fencing and access in good working order
  • To liaise with the Fold Produce Coordinator to ensure maximisation of sales and minimisation of  waste


  • With support from the Fold Accountant, write the annual budget and manage within its ratios
  • Organise relevant team meetings and attend relevant management and team councils
  • Agree rotas for watering, weekend duties, chickens etc
  • Ensure H & S compliance, updating risk assessments etc as required
  • Prepare for and maintaining Soil Association accreditation

Care farm

  • Liaising with and support the Fold Care Farm therapeutic provision in planning appropriate tasks for the Care Farm participants

People management and training

  • Provide leadership, management, and instruction to farm team
  • Recruit appropriate staff, deal with inductions, appraisals and personnel issues
  • Host and support volunteers, students and WWOOFer’s as agreed

Areas for development include:

  • Planning and implementing development of the market garden facilities, including liaising with the maintenance team for the moving and set up of the glasshouses – with support from the Fold Director
  • Recruiting and supporting trainees with tutorial sessions
  • Work with the team to develop and deliver training
  • Integrating small scale grain and pulse production

Working hours

Full time, permanent, including weekend duties on a rota; variable through the year

Geographical Areas of Management

  • Cherry Orchard, Holywell care farm area, The Cambridge Glass House and surrounding area (until replaced), The Farm office, the Packing shed, store and surrounding area

Competences, Skills, Knowledge and Experience - Essential

At least three years’ experience of helping to run a market garden operation growing a wide range of vegetables organically.

Knowledge and experience:

  • low till soil management
  • developing excellent soil health
  • involvement in a veg box scheme
  • production planning
  • implementing risk assessments
  • organic accreditation procedures

Empathic team leader and player, facilitating, listening, allowing and enabling.

Competences, Skills, Knowledge and Experience - Desirable

Apprenticeship in Market Gardening

Trained in organic horticulture to HND or OND level

Experience with:

  • training interns, trainees and course participants
  • SA accreditation and H & S management
  • working in a care farm
  • recruiting staff
  • farm planning and budget setting
  • and interest in plant based arable production
  • training in education

Awareness of and experience in funding and investment possibilities
