Organic Vegetable Grower

Kensons Farm
Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire

Posted: 4 May 2022

Deadline: 17 Jun 2022

Compensation: £9.50 per hour

Paid Full-time Permanent

Job description

To join team assisting with planting, weeding, irrigating, harvesting and packing a wide range of seasonal organic vegetables for retail and wholesale.

We are a 10ha organic vegetable farm growing quality produce for sale at the farm gate and three weekly markets, with some wholesale. We're a small but highly productive team who work hard and enjoy what we do. There's 2000m2 polytunnels with summer crops such as tomatoes, beans and cucumbers as well as salads and a range of field scale crops including brassicas, leeks, onions, carrots and squash. Seasonal tractor work, ploughing, power harrowing, driving the planter and mechanical weeding. An organic vegetable grower on a small unit needs to be an all-rounder, equally happy in the field, polytunnel, workshop, packing shed or at market. During the growing season from April to October there is a lot going on, so you need to be level-headed and enjoy a challenge. Between November to March we're harvesting for the farm shop, markets and wholesale, along with general farm work.

Much of our produce goes direct to the public, and we have a strong loyal customer base.

Like most farming, the work is physically demanding and you will do best with an ongoing interest in food production, an open minded, flexible approach to work and an understanding that there is always more to learn. Organic veg growing is agroecology in action, building soil fertility with minimal inputs, protecting crops without synthetic sprays and managing weeds without herbicides. Training can be given in organic methods.

The job starts May 2022 with interviews arranged as soon as possible.
