Job description

Locavore CIC is recruiting for Seasonal Growers - various FT/PT contracts available between April-October 2023. FOR MORE INFORMATION INCLUDING HOW TO APPLY, HEAD OVER TO https://locavore.scot/recruitment/. If you don't see the role listed, please check back in a few days.

About this role:

We’re looking for growers to help at our low-tillage organic market gardens. You’ll get involved with all aspects of the day to day running of our small farm which includes composting beds, weeding, sowing, basic maintenance and construction and - through peak season - lots of harvesting, transplanting and pruning. You'll be working at both our Glasgow and Neilston growing sites, both of which have excellent public transport accessibility. Our farm team is high-energy! We run human-powered market gardens as opposed to large farms with big machines. This means we use hand tools and ourselves as our main tools in the most efficient ways possible. In practice this comes down to working together to find the fastest way of harvesting 100kg of lettuce within a couple of hours, or thinking of the most efficient way to plant 800 tomato plants in a day, of 5 different varieties without mixing them up.  Having a genuine interest in this method of working will go a long way on our farms. You should be able to learn lots about organic market gardening during a season on our farm.  There will be large harvests, lots of sowing and weeding, regular early starts and all the kinds of weather you can think of, and in exchange you will be a part of a very fun and friendly team of seriously dedicated and passionate growers who take pride in growing good food responsibly, and know how to have a good time (and play the right tunes) while working hard.

Person Specification:

Skills & attributes we seek include:

  • The ideal candidate would have experience of doing a similar role in a commercial horticultural setting and/or a genuine interest in small scale commercial market gardening. This role should not be likened to community gardening.

  • A genuine interest in small scale organic farming

  • Fast and efficient worker with manual tasks (such as weeding, transplanting and harvesting), OR proven ability of being fast and efficient at similar manual work.

  • Able to receive instructions and guidance. Able to co-operate smoothly with others as part of a team.

  • Physically fit and healthy to meet the demands of this physical role.

  • Fine with getting soaked in a cold windy field and tolerating the occasional ray of sunshine.

  • A full clean driving license and ability to drive a large van is preferable.
