Job description

We are looking for a pastry chef to join our bakery team. Back of house consists of two bread bakers and two pastry chefs, and we are recruiting for the junior pastry chef role, although in time promotion is an option for the right candidate. We work with amazing ingredients, making buns, cookies and cakes from British stoneground flour. The pastry section is influenced by our family connection to Stockholm, plus our British heritage and experience working in European restaurants. The team is close knit and friendly, and we all eat lunch together every day. The working week stretches from Wednesday until Sunday lunch time. We have generous fixed holidays; 4 weeks in August, up to two weeks at Christmas and 10 days at Easter. 

We are ideally looking for a candidate with bakery experience, though we appreciate restaurant backgrounds too. We really value the hospitality work traits of excellent communication, efficiency, strategy and cleanliness. These will get you a long way. There is definitely some scope for learning on the job, for example, experience with a dough sheeter would be helpful but not mandatory. 

The right candidate will enjoy trying to refine their craft each day as they go through their tasks. With the type of flour we use, there is a lot of variation so attention to detail and an ability to respond to what is in front of you is crucial. 

Because we are a small team, each person makes a big impact so good, positive energy is really valued.

About Hamblin Bread

We are a neighbourhood bakery in East Oxford, specialising in making bread with U.K. stoneground flour. We buy grain direct from farmers and have it milled to order by Offley Mill in Staffordshire. We also make a variety of sweet items, including Swedish buns, cookies and cakes, and we sell produce such as vegetables, honey, cheese, wine and charcuterie from suppliers we respect.
