Job description

Haye Farm, 73 acre mixed organic farm located in East Devon comprises a number of small businesses. We have a herd of Red Devon cows, breeding Gloucester Old Spot sows, Exlana sheep, egg laying chickens, a butchery and a brewery, for which we grow heritage grains. Our aim is to create sustainable food systems which support high levels of productivity whilst encouraging an increase in biodiversity and wildlife.

The successful vegetable business, established 5 years ago, produces for a number of restaurants and shops on an area of 4 acres. The set-up includes both a market garden on 1 acre and field scale crops on 3 acres.

We are looking for a grower to join us for the 2020 season, starting on April 1st until October 31st, to help with all aspects of the vegetable business operation. You will mainly be working alongside the head grower and assistant grower, but also with other full and part time staff from the farm who will help out with planting and harvesting.

Cultivation and production in the 1 acre market garden will be entirely by hand using a two-wheeled tractor and a range of wheel hoes and hand tools. The field-scale vegetable production will use a four-wheeled tractor and sit-on planters. Most harvesting is done by hand, although potatoes, leeks and carrots are harvested with the help of tractor-mounted machinery.

Main tasks:

  • Assisting with the propagation of vegetable plants from seed
  • Watering plants in the nursery
  • Preparing market garden beds for planting/sowing
  • Using a seeder for direct sowing
  • Transplanting plants into market garden beds
  • Weeding field and market garden crops using hand tools as appropriate
  • Working in a team on the tractor-mounted planter
  • Assisting with the set-up of irrigation equipment
  • Harvesting fruit and vegetables and packing orders
  • Maintenance of permanent/perennial fruit and vegetable plants
  • Assisting with composting systems
  • Tidying up and cleaning workspaces after completing tasks
  • Cleaning and storing equipment after use
  • Maintaining hoes and harvest knives with appropriate sharpening techniques
  • Sharing responsibility for safe working practice

Desirable skills, experience and interests:

  • Experience of growing vegetables in a commercial context
  • A commitment to ecologically sensitive farming
  • Appreciate the importance of high quality produce for our customers
  • Ability to follow protocols and procedures
  • Attention to detail and good record keeping
  • Interested in taking ownership of tasks and projects
  • Using initiative to achieve the best outcome possible including alerting the team to potential problems and issues in good time
  • Reliable, self-motivated and able to work on own at times.
  • Basic IT skills (online email, spreadsheets, word processing)
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team

In return we will offer you:

  • Weekly vegetable box
  • Discounted eggs and meat from the farm
  • Salary will be based on current minimum wage

Usual working hours are 8am to 4.45pm with a 20 minute morning break and 45 minutes for lunch. Our hours as a team may vary to harvest at the best times for high quality produce in the height of summer. We will always plan these as a team and give you plenty of notice of earlier starts.

Accommodation could be available onsite. To be discussed in detail during the interview.

Interviews to be held on Wednesday 26th February and Friday 28th February. Please indicate which of the two dates you would be able to attend.
