Capital Growth, an initiative of Sustain, is a network of community food gardens. It helped create over 2,000 new gardens and has now supported over 3,000 since our launch in 2008. As well as helping people establish and run food growing activities, we provide training, events and networking opportunities, online support, tools and publications and London-wide engagement days and promotion. We represent community food growers at a policy and London-wide level and provide a platform for innovative ideas and information sharing. We are also increasingly interested in supporting larger-scale horticultural enterprises, especially in peri-urban areas. www.capitalgrowth.org
Specifically we aim to:
- Ensure all Londoners have access to and know about their local community food gardens, have opportunities to get involved, and that these gardens are well supported.
- Promote and increase the benefits that growing food has for health, wellbeing, skills and learning.
- Identify ways that land for food growing can be adequately protected for the future.
- Increase the environmental and biodiversity benefits that community gardens and horticultural enterprises provide, locally and beyond.
- Ensure community food gardens are represented in local and London-wide consultations, and in local and city-wide policies, funding and support programmes.
- Monitor, evaluate and disseminate learnings from our work.
The Capital Growth Coordinator will oversee the development of the network and related projects, ensuring the activities continue to provide useful services and advocacy, gardens are supported and promoted and that Capital Growth delivers on its key objectives.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Coordinator will:
- Review, consult and update Capital Growth aims and objectives.
- Research and develop ideas for new fundable projects and activities linked to aims and objectives covering health and wellbeing, access to nature and biodiversity and skills and training.
- Work with the Programme Director to write and implement a plan for funding and income generation, as well as develop funding applications.
- Advocate for community food gardens with policy- and decision-makers, including coordination of responses to relevant consultations.
- Provide the data and analysis that underpins the ‘Food Growing’ chapter in Sustain’s Good Food for London report: www.sustainweb.org/gffl/ .
- Finalise and coordinate a work programme of events, training and engagement across the Capital Growth network, covering our London-wide days and engage with hub gardens and training partners as part of this.
- Plan and develop communications, including printed materials, project website, press releases and case studies.
- Increase online presence and mailing lists, through delivery of social media plan, newsletters and other online activities.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records, prepare reports to funders and ensure monitoring and evaluation of the project is delivered.
- Develop partnerships as required to meet objectives, generate income and meet funding requirements, including the development of the Grow Well Feel Well and Roots to Work events.
- Organise a working party and community garden steering group to ensure partners and members are engaged and involved.
- Engage new community food growing spaces to join the Capital Growth network and benefit from support.
- Update and maintain the Capital Growth databases and website, primarily ensuring that new membership applications are processed.
- Work with Sustain’s Veg Cities campaign to encourage more London networks of gardens to be supported: /www.vegcities.org/.
- Assist other project officers at Sustain in various tasks in relation to the London Food Link network and support Sustain projects as required.
- Manage the Capital Growth Project Officer, Allotment Officer and volunteers to assist in delivering the above duties where appropriate and organise team meetings.
- Other tasks that may arise from time to time.
- Commitment to and experience of developing sustainable food and horticulture, especially in and around urban areas
- Experience of fundraising and/or generating income streams
- Experience of managing funded community food growing or related projects and meeting funding requirements
- Experience of organising a programme of events and training
- Understanding of food growing and biodiversity issues
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including facilitation skills, social media with strong attention to detail
- High level of IT competency including use of email, excel and databases
- Ability to work independently and solve problems creatively
- Experience of building relationships with diverse professions and organisations
- Good time management and organisational skills
- Experience of working with and recruiting volunteers
- Experience of producing published reports and briefings
- Experience of peer-to-peer support programmes and engaging and working with diverse groups
- Experience of delivering training
- Experience of working with databases to manage networks
- Understanding of health and wellbeing issues in relation to food growing
- Understanding of development opportunities and how to grow these
- Knowledge of London food scene, specifically food growing
- Line management of staff and/or volunteers
- Salary: £39,574 per annum pro rata, so equates to £23,744 for 0.6 Full Time Equivalent (FTE). Sustain matches pension contributions up to 5% of gross salary, available after a probationary period of three months.
- Working Hours: 0.6 FTE (3 days per week) with potential for more days subject to fundraising
- Contract: Fixed-term contract for one year
- Reporting to: Programme Director
- Responsible for: Project Officer and Allotment Coordinator
- Location: Sustain’s office Bethnal Green, East London. Travel within London is required, together with occasional travel outside London.
- Holiday: 20 days basic annual holiday, pro rata 0.6 FTE (equating to 12 days per annum) rising two days every year to a maximum limit of 25 days (pro rata).
