About this role
The Food Power programme aims to strengthen local communities’ ability to reduce food poverty through solutions developed by them with the support of their peers from across the UK. The programme is led by Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming together with Church Action on Poverty and is funded by the National Lottery Community Fund. The programme is delivered by three programme staff and a team of peer mentors based around the country.
Since the programme started in 2017 we have built a network of 60+ food poverty alliances, assisted a wide range of local initiatives and supported people with lived experience of food poverty to shape the response to food poverty. More recently, we have been supporting our network during the Covid-19 pandemic. During the next phase of the programme, we will continue to support the network to respond while maintaining a focus on developing sustainable responses to food poverty and strengthening local food resilience for the long term. Please note that this role is maternity cover which will run until the current funding for Food Power ends on 30th June 2021. A draft work plan will be provided to assist the transition.
About Sustain’s work on food poverty
Sustain believes that modern-day hunger is unacceptable, and we work to improve policy and practice at the national and local level. Many councils, community groups and others are taking action to ensure people are able to eat and to address the root causes of people’s difficulties. We believe government, councils and other statutory partners should step up and tackle the root causes of food poverty together, thereby rebalancing the burden of responsibility that currently falls far too heavily on charities, faith groups, volunteers and others responding to local need. These groups are unfairly being relied on to respond to people in food crisis, and in some cases replace what should be provided by fair pay and our shared safety net.
Alongside Food Power, Sustain runs the London Food Poverty Campaign, which monitors and supports London boroughs’ response to food poverty, particularly actions which address the root causes. We also co-lead the Right to Food Project which aims to realise the Right to Food in UK law. Sustain also campaigns to reinstate and expand meals on wheels services; the need for these services has become even clearer during Covid-19. Find out more.
Tasks and responsibilities
Food Power communications are a core part of the programme, helping to share learning and experiences among our network and beyond, as well as to shape the response to food poverty. This role has a varied and exciting workload, working closely with Food Power team, peer mentors and local food poverty alliances, as well as Sustain’s senior management, Sustain colleagues and other organisations. The Food Power Communications Coordinator’s responsibilities will include:

As a general point of principle, Sustain prefers for staff to work mainly at the Sustain office in Cambridge Heath, East London – and to work remotely or from home only occasionally, after a period of probation settling in to Sustain’s culture, relationships and working practices. This is due to the highly interactive nature of our work and the importance of building supportive and creative personal relationships within teams and across the whole organisation. It is one of the most valued and distinctive features of life at Sustain. During Covid-19, we have of course needed to work online and from home almost exclusively, so we are keeping this under constant review for the time being.
Subject to government Covid-19 guidelines, the role is likely to involve travel around the UK and occasional overnight stays, to enable participation of a wide range of geographical locations through support, training, regional and national events.
