Job description

We’re looking for an experienced and passionate Chef to play a key role in growing our innovative catering social enterprise. Good Measure is a small but fast-growing catering social enterprise, making a real impact for people experiencing barriers to employment. We’re looking for someone who shares our goals and vision to join in a key kitchen role at this pivotal time in our development. 

In this role you will oversee our main production kitchen - producing breakfast, lunchtime and special occasion catering for corporate customers across London. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Daily production of lunchtime catering orders for a range of customers across London 
  • Menu design and costing, in response to seasonality and to meet specific customer requirements 
  • Working with the Operations Manager to continually develop Good Measure’s menus and service offering 
  • Overseeing a small team of kitchen assistants, who have graduated from Good Measure training schemes 

To succeed in this role, you will have a strong background in the catering industry - ideally working at a Chef de Partie or equivalent level, within catering, restaurants, cafes or similar environments. You will have a good understanding of what makes a kitchen run successfully, with the ability to manage teams to produce fantastic food, within a safe and efficient kitchen environment, working to customer requirements and cost/price parameters.

You’ll have the ability to work alone, using your own initiative - or to manage a small team when required. You’ll be keen to use your knowledge, creativity and passion for food to push forward the development of our menu and catering offering.

You’ll also be committed to using food as a vehicle to make a difference to those facing disadvantage. You will share our belief in the transformative power of food as a therapeutic and vocational tool for people experiencing unemployment, and you will have a clear commitment for creating pathways to employment in the hospitality sector. Most importantly, you understand that our charitable aims and our trainees are at the heart of everything we do and that all of our activity  is in pursuit of creating real change in the lives of people experiencing unemployment.

We’re a small charity, with just three members of staff: An Operations Manager, and Chef/Trainer and this new role of Chef, to lead our production kitchen. You’ll be flexible, able to work independently without direction and understanding of the constraints of a start-up organisations. At the same time, we’ll offer you a trusting and flexible working environment, with the opportunity to make a lasting  difference to a small and passionate organisation that is making a huge difference in the lives of disadvantaged people. 

  • £22,000 Pro-rata | £11.28 per hour 
  • 25 hours per week
  • Normal working hours 0700-1200, Monday to Friday (some flexibility required for bookings outside of this time) 
  • 6 month FTC, with intention to extend 
  • Based in Bethnal Green 

What is Good Measure?

Good Measure is an exciting catering social enterprise, run by the charity Jubilee Community Enterprises. Our mission is to harness the power of food to transform lives and enrich our community.

We deliver a two-stage  training programme in catering and bakery, working with long-term unemployed people and supporting them to develop the skills, knowledge and experience to gain paid employment in the catering sector. We work in partnership with mental health trusts, homelessness charities and refugee groups to we deliver training in the Boroughs of Lewisham and Tower Hamlets.

We also operate as a catering social enterprise, serving a wide range of corporate customers across London. Our production kitchen provides an opportunity to create work experience and paid employment opportunities for previous Good Measure trainees.   

Role Profile

Purpose of the role: To lead the Good Measure Production Kitchen, designing and delivering lunch, breakfast and special occasion catering to customers across London.

  • Design and produce Good Measure lunchtime menus to suit a range of customer needs and requirements 
  • Oversee the smooth operating of the kitchen, including ordering supplies, food hygiene/ health and safety management and cleaning 
  • Line management / supervision of Kitchen Assistants 
  • Training and supervision of Good Measure trainees on work placement 
  • Stock and inventory management 
  • Working with the Operations Manager on menu and service development, including: food styling/ branding, supply chain and logistics. 

Person Specification

Experience

  1. At least 3 years experience in a professional chef position (E) 
  2. Experience of designing, costing and delivering menus (E) 
  3. Management or supervisory responsibilities in a kitchen environment (D) 
  4. Experience within a cafe or catering operation with significant lunchtime business (D) 

Skills and Knowledge

  1. Good knowledge and understanding of health and safety practices within a commercial kitchen (E) 
  2. Good understanding of labelling and allergen requirements in relation to pre-prepared food (E) 
  3. Knowledge of key trends within workplace / events catering (E) 

Qualifications

  1. Qualified to Level 2 or 3, or equivalent by experience in professional cookery (E) 
  2. Qualified to Level 2 or above in Food Safety (E) 

Other

  1. A passion to use food as a vehicle for social impact (E)
  2. An ability to work independently using own initiative (E)
  3. A flexible approach to working hours (E)
