In September 2025, Roots to Work hosted the first of a new series of careers webinars, showcasing the career journeys of talented people from all parts of the sustainable food and farming sector.
Hosted by Sustain’s (outgoing) Diversity Outreach Coordinator, Roshni Shah, the panel featured:
-
Shereen Chung-Blake - Future Gardeners Programme Coordinator at Bankside Open Spaces Trust
-
Sunita Ramani - Destructive Diets Campaign Manager at Foodrise
-
Idman Abdurahaman - Inclusive Movement Manager at Eating Better
-
Ped Asgarian - Director, Feeding Bristol
Our speakers shared their varied journeys into the sector, what skills they needed and despite coming from different backgrounds and being at different career stages, there were common threads that ran through everyone’s stories.
Key takeaways from our panel:
-
Find your people - working in this sector can be tough, especially if you are from a marginalised background. Therefore it is important to find those people who can support you and help build confidence to take up space.
-
Be true to your values - we often come into this sector because of our passion for the cause. You don’t have to compromise on your values to find meaningful work
-
Keep learning - self directed learning in (from courses to articles. blogs and podcasts) can help build your knowledge and skills, especially if you are new to the sector.
-
Volunteer if you can - if you have a capacity, volunteering with organisations you admire can give you valuable insight into different job roles and how they operate.
