EcoLogic Conservation Grazing Team Leader

Funded 15mth post minimum with a view to creation of long-term post Reference: Ecologic IC 1 Location: East Devon, Branscombe Salary: £24,000. Hours: 40 hours per week 

An amazing opportunity to be involved with managing nature conservation sites across East Devon. 

EcoLogic are looking for a project officer to help deliver an ambitious and innovative conservation grazing project, funded through Devon County Council’s Natural Capital Challenge Fund. 

Working closely with partners, landowners and contractors, the selected applicant will help deliver a suite of projects across East Devon. We are looking for someone with experience of managing and delivering habitat management, with livestock being a key part of the delivery. The individual would need to be self-motivated and able to manage and supervise a small team of two apprentices. 

Working in partnership with the East Devon District Council and RSPB this exciting role will facilitate extensive conservation grazing across high nature value sites with a variety of habitats including heathland, saltmarsh, neutral grassland, woodlands and wet grassland. 

The ideal candidate will have experience of working on nature reserves or farms and have extensive practical skills including using farm machinery such as tractors and trailers, post knockers and toppers. The role will be varied with a variety of tasks, however the main responsibility for the successful candidate will be the supervision and instruction of two apprentices who will be working across the same area.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience: 

  • Ability to lead on care and welfare of livestock ensuring we will meet all animal welfare and cross compliance legislation including record keeping.
  • Ability to lead and instruct a small team, to communicate effectively and work closely with others – other organisations’ staff members/volunteers.
  • Knowledge/understanding of/interest in nature conservation.
  • Demonstrable experience of safely using and maintaining farm machinery and tractors.
  • Experience of fencing: both installing and repairing. To include livestock boundary fences & gates.
  • Competence in routine operation, and servicing and maintenance of machinery and vehicles, with appropriate record keeping, to ensure they are operating safely and efficiently.
  • Maintenance of buildings and infrastructure to ensure they are operating as required.
  • Keeping up to date health and safety records to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and to enable improvements to be set.
  • Possess a willing, pragmatic approach and a 'can-do' attitude.
  • You will have knowledge and experience of practical land and habitat management.
  • Comfortable lone working /working in remote locations
  • Interest in adopting and developing new techniques and practices

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Lantra or equivalent qualification in Tractor driving, brush cutter & Chainsaw
  • Livestock management – especially native breeds of cattle
