Job description

Please note that this is a Government funded Kickstart vacancy. To apply for this job, you must be claiming Universal Credit and 16 to 24 years old.


This role will support several Sustain projects, primarily on communications activities and events, sharing information, stories and news to a range of audiences, using varied communication channels including emails, online news, social media and a printed magazine. In particular the role will support:

  • London Food Link to run our online and print magazine – The Jellied Eel – and support our network of people and businesses to promote good food
  • Sustainable Food Places to run key events and coordinated actions

This placement is part of Race for Nature’s Recovery (, a new programme working to improve the diversity of the environmental sector. It is open to all young people that are eligible for Kickstart placements. We particularly welcome applications from people from BAME backgrounds and non-graduates.


We expect the candidate to attend our office one full day per week initially and full hours from April, subject to government restrictions.


  • Demonstrate an interest in healthy or sustainable food, how it’s grown, produced, eaten or distributed and the opportunities to improve health, biodiversity, the local economy and reduce climate impacts through better food and farming.
  • Able to undertake basic desk research, write survey questions as well as interest to learn basic analysis and summary of findings (using Excel or via programmes such as Survey Monkey).
  • Interested in learning about and contacting other organisations and businesses operating within or with an interest in the healthy food and environmental sector, particularly community food growing and local food networks.
  • Awareness of the need to promote diversity and demonstrate this in our day-to-day work.
  • Able to speak and write fluent English for a variety of audiences and using different channels such as emails, newsletters, features, news items and short reports.
  • Awareness of social media platforms and interest in learning how to use these to promote projects and organisations.
  • Interest in learning to use online platforms such as Mailchimp, Zoom and Teams.
  • Interest in photography and learning design programmes including Canva.
  • Friendly and personable approach, and able to work in teams.
  • Able to follow instructions, organise tasks and prioritise work.
