Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

If you ever imagined running your own shop and wanted to try it out on a smaller scale, and love the idea of working for a passion-driven food startup, then this role is for you.

We are looking for someone who is friendly and outgoing, reliable, and as passionate about food as we are to take the lead on our Borough Market sales and manage our stall.  Your responsibilities will range from merchandising our market stall to drive sales, to managing inventory and delivering excellent customer service to potential, new and existing customers.  As part of a small but fast-growing team you will have the opportunity to be hands-on, shape your Market Manager role and take on more responsibility as the business grows.  You will be working with and reporting to our founder to continuously grow our sales and improve our market presence.

Borough Market is London’s oldest food market and is the vibrant home of many iconic food brands.  Whether it’s local residents doing their groceries or people visiting from overseas, hundreds of thousands of unique customers visit the market every week.  The market has strong commitments to protecting the environment and reducing waste, and the nibs etc. market stall is Borough Market’s first ever ‘refill’ stall.  We are very proud to be part of what the market represents; how it is on the frontline of sustainability, and how we eat both now and in the future.

Your Role:

  • You will bring potential, new and existing customers to the stall with your infectious energy.

  • You will be proactive in engaging and sampling with customers,  catering suggestions based on their individual wants and needs.

  • You will be an advocate for our brand values as if they were your own, communicating our brand mission and vision, educating the customer on how we are fighting food waste.

  • You will offer excellent customer service and be quick to problem solve, dealing with any situation that may arise.

  • You will be in charge of opening and closing the nibs etc. Borough Market stall, including but not limited to setup, stock counts, cashing up, and taking down of stand.

  • You will merchandise the stall as directed, taking initiative to improve existing and implement new sales and operational processes where it might benefit the company and increase sales.

  • You will be responsible for making sure the market stall is always in working order and representative of our brand.

  • You will manage our Borough Market inventory: from products to POS.

  • You will be driven to hit sales targets, striving to increase rate of sale of our products.

  • You will provide regular (internal) reports on market sales, learnings, successes and customer demographic data.

  • You will be in charge of managing seasonal staff, from interviewing and training to managing.

  • You will work collaboratively with the team to represent nibs etc. across different markets (ex. seasonal/xmas), events, in-store samplings and trade shows.

Your Skills:

  • You are great with people and have excellent spoken and written communication skills.

  • You are passionate about food, waste, and or sustainability.

  • You consider yourself to be very organised and reliable.

  • You are hungry for sales and driven to hit [and exceed] sales targets to achieve growth.

  • You have an entrepreneurial mindset and feel comfortable stepping outside of your role when needed.

  • You are organised and manage your time efficiently, prioritising strategically under pressure.

  • You consider yourself a team player and are ready to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in.

  • You are strong; setup/pack down requires the lifting and moving of wooden tables/stands

  • Bonus: Level 2 Food Hygiene + Safety certification - please attach appropriate documentation.

  • Bonus: you speak (a) foreign  language(s) at a conversational level; not essential, but very helpful at an international tourist destination such as Borough market.

OUR VALUES

Passion-driven: we live, breathe, talk, sleep, dream food, and we are emotional about food waste.

Celebrate side streams:  from our ingredients to our ideas, we believe offcuts, odds and ends, all deserve to be celebrated, respected and heard. We’re mainstream-ing side streams.
