Job description

An exciting new vacancy has arisen for a Farm Shop and Front-of-House Manager at our award-winning café and shop. We are looking for a friendly, outgoing and energetic individual with exceptional customer service and people management skills to head up our brilliant Front of House team. The role also involves managing and developing our Farm Shop and online store.

Purpose

To ensure that the Shop & Café FOH functions efficiently and effectively, by maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organisation, in a safe & welcoming community space, providing the highest standards of customer service, while managing the customer experience at the City Farm Cafe in a manner that is financially profitable and within the aims and objectives of Windmill Hill City Farm.

Main duties and responsibilities

Management Duties

  • To develop the offer in the café & farm shop in line with the department objectives set with the Enterprise Development Manager
  • To resource and manage a team that is capable delivering the highest standards of customer service.
  • To take responsibility for ordering, ensuring that stock levels are adequate, profit margins are maintained, wastage & loss are minimised, and the Café’s sustainability policy is followed.
  • To ensure the FOH team adhere to the Café’s HACCP, ensuring best food safety practice is always followed, and maintaining a good Food Hygiene Rating.
  • To lead, manage, support & develop the Front of House team.
  • To manage the staffing rota and leave. 
  • To identify training needs in the team, both statutory and others that may help their development and add to their knowledge, making them an asset to the farm.
  • To carry our regular reviews and appraisals with the team, setting meaningful, measurable objectives, and monitoring their progress and development.
  • To direct new and junior staff, helping them to prioritise their workloads, and to provide accurate and thorough training in the Café’s procedures.

Experience

  • Min of 3 years’ experience in a similar environment 
  • Experience of food retail, EPOS systems, stock management & ecommerce  
  • A strong working knowledge of food safety management
  • An approachable, flexible and cheerful manner
  • Proven high standards of customer service
  • Experience of EPOS, stock management & ecommerce
  • An interest in sustainably produced food
  • Experience managing a team including sessional staff & volunteers
  • Demonstrable commitment to equal opportunities
  • Positive about working with volunteers with support needs

Operational

  • To serve customers, operate the till, take food orders, and make coffee to a high standard;
  • To ensure accurate cash handling and cashing up processes are followed by the FOH team, making every effort to minimise discrepancies.
  • To liaise with the Garden team and the Café Chefs as suppliers of produce to the cafe;
  • To develop and maintain good customer relations, and set an example of excellent customer interactions for the FOH team, demonstrating friendly, professional, knowledgeable customer service.
  • To ensure accurate cash handling and cashing up processes are followed by the FOH team, making every effort to minimise discrepancies.
  • To maintain the FOH section, seating area & shop and all equipment to appropriate clean and hygienic standards and ensure that it meets all statutory requirements.
  • To maintain appropriate administrative records.
  • To provide holiday and sickness cover where appropriate.

General

  • To work within and promote the aims and objectives of the City Farm, and to present a positive image of the farm to the public, contributing to its good public reputation.
  • To work to create a culture of inclusion, collaboration and co-operation, where everyone’s contribution is recognised and valued by their colleagues.
  • To abide by the City Farm’s policies including its Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, and Environmental policies.
  • To attend staff meetings and supervision sessions as required, at either site as required.
  • To ensure that the output and quality of your work is of the highest professional standards.
  • To carry out any other duties appropriate to the responsibilities of the post, as required.
  • To have a flexible working ethos and be available to work regularly at weekends, as the business is open 7 days a week;

Person Specification

  • Good people management and communication skills.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar environment.
  • A good working knowledge of food safety, hygiene, health & safety legislation.
  • A strong working knowledge of EPOS, stock management & ecommerce
  • Experience managing a team including sessional staff & volunteers
  • An approachable, flexible and cheerful manner
  • Proven high standards of customer service
  • Demonstrable commitment to equal opportunities
  • Positive about working with volunteers with support needs
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • A good team worker
