Job description

Grow is a sustainable bar, kitchen and cultural hub in Hackney Wick (E9) and we are looking for a creative and passionate chef to help build on our reputation as a tasty, healthy and sustainable kitchen. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Sous Chef to work with Head Chef/Kitchen Manager to develop the kitchen at Grow, helping us to expand the menu offering and increase the number of covers.

We are a fresh produce kitchen and seek to use local suppliers/producers where possible. We have a strong plant based offering and it is imperative that we maintain this. Our meat is high welfare, is expensive and therefore we keep it to a minimum. We seek to strike a balance between a good quality, healthy offering and an offering that is desirable in a bar environment.

As part of the role you will be expected to:

  • Take control of the kitchen in the absence off the Head Chef

  • Support the Head Chef in the development and roll out of the menu, loosely middle eastern/european with a healthy edge and an emphasis on plant based (not exclusively plant based, we do serve some sourced meat and dairy). 

  • Help to cost any new menu items, being conscious of customer price points and our margins

  • Assist in recruiting and training of new kitchen team members

  • Work in the kitchen cooking and running the pass

  • Be responsible for delegating tasks as appropriate

  • Be ultimately responsible for health and safety within the kitchen including cleaning rotas

  • Support in supplier communication, stock management and ordering produce

  • Produce weekly rotas for the kitchen team

  • Work with the front of house team to ensure a good customer experience. We aim to foster a climate of cooperation and respect between co-workers

What qualities are we looking for?

  • A great communicator and team player

  • Strong management and organisational skills

  • A real interest in good food, plant based options and sustainability

  • Someone with a good understanding of HACCP and kitchen due diligence

  • A great chef!

  • Someone able to work cooperatively with an existing team including another senior chef

  • Someone who stays calm under pressure, is good at crisis management and conflict resolution

  • Level 2 food hygiene certificate (minimum)
