Job description

Global Generation is looking for someone who is passionate about involving the community in connecting to nature and gardening.  As the Education Gardener and Coordinator, you will be responsible for engaging local children, young people, families and volunteers in Global Generation’s outdoor learning projects.

Main Duties and Responsibilities As the Education and Community Gardener you will:

  • Develop the vision alongside the education team and garden team on how best to involve children and young people in all aspects of Global Generation’s nature based learning
  • Involve children, young people, local residents and families in Global Generation’s projects - with a specific focus on school children and our spaces in King’s Cross
  • Coordinate, deliver and evaluate the in-school and out-of-school nature and nurture workshops
  • Be the main point of contact for local King’s Cross primary schools, promoting opportunities to get involved in the gardens
  • Coordinate the freelance Education Gardeners and organise regular catch ups with the rest of the education gardening team
  • Plan and facilitate the Family Saturday days engaging children and their parents / carers in discovering nature and urban gardening
  • Work with vulnerable people and people with special needs - such as vulnerable families, young people with learning disabilities, older people living in supported housing, refugee and asylum seekers, children from Frank Barnes School for Deaf Children
  • Celebrate the children and young people’s achievements through seasonal events inviting the wider community
  • Attend meetings as required and input into vision of gardens and wider organisation

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A minimum of 4 years experience involving young people and communities in outdoor learning and gardening projects
  • Passionate about working with children, young people and volunteers and to engage them in ways to help them connect to nature and learn new skills
  • Experience of planning creative gardening sessions including outdoor and indoor tasks year long
  • A love of working outdoors, passion for the natural environment and urban gardening
  • A desire to work on a new heritage funded project exploring local and hidden waterways, as well as water and climate change
  • Ready to take initiative, a flexible attitude and able to deal with change
  • Great administration and organisational skills
  • Empathy with Global Generation’s ethos and interest in values based learning
