Market Gardener

Days/Hours: 42.5 hours – Monday to Friday (some flexibility on working hours – dependent on harvest days and time of year)

Salary: £26,000 pa PAYE

Holiday: 28 days annually including bank holidays

Location: Radlett, Hertfordshire 

Wild Farm was established in 2022 to produce fruit and vegetables to supply to our cafes across Hertfordshire. The market garden has been developed using low-tillage and organic production practices by a small team. There is also a small flock of chickens which supplement our bakery with eggs. It is still in a period of expansion, and you will be involved in all aspects of the expansion and running a market garden.

Core Duties:

  • Propagation, planting and harvesting of crops
  • Assisting with preparation of produce for delivery
  • Nursery management of greenhouse and polytunnels
  • Compost management
  • Soft fruit and tree fruit management
  • Farm maintenance – mowing, weeding, pruning
  • Crop care – irrigating, feeding, crop protection, pest & disease control
  • Caring for the flock of chickens – daily feeding, egg collection and weekly cleaning
  • Café maintenance – planning and planting the planters and borders at the cafes, plus weeding, tidying and pruning to maintain high standards for the customers
  • Record keeping
  • Engage with and educate the wider Wild Farm team about the market garden and the produce

Essential:

  • Knowledge and interest in organic production methods
  • Experience or willingness to work outdoors in all weathers
  • Self-motivated, hard-working, diligent and organised
  • Ability to work alone and in a small team
  • Good efficiency levels with manual tasks – sowing, weeding, planting, harvesting
  • Willingness to work to high standards – quality produce for our chefs and customers
  • Passionate about sustainable food production
  • Willingness to adhere to health and safety requirements of the farm
  • Full clean UK driving license and access to own vehicle

Desirable:

  • Prior food growing, gardening or allotment experience
  • Experience of poultry husbandry
  • Use of machinery – tractor with flail and rotary tiller attachments
  • Basic DIY skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word

About The Cafe in the Park

We are a small group of Cafes within Hertfordshire and have set up a small 4 acre site to grow cut flowers and vegetables within our Kitchen.
