Contract terms:

Period: Contract for 16 hours per week as a sessional worker

Fee: £18 per hour. Invoicing schedule to be agreed.

Location: Home-based, with regular/weekly visits to Stonehill Community Garden, Abingdon Oxfordshire

The Trustees of Stonehill Community Garden are seeking an enthusiastic manager and fundraiser to start in April. The vacancy could be for two individuals or one person for both Garden Coordinator and Fundraising/Admin Coordinator. The garden is located down Stonehill Lane/Oday Hill at the same turning as the Stonehill Riding School off the Drayton Road (first left after leaving South of Abingdon).

Scope:

  • Stonehill Community Garden is a charitable company that aims to bring people from all walks of life to connect with nature and each other, to improve mental and physical wellbeing and to promote sustainable ways of growing and living. Within this, we aim to provide a space where people can grow within themselves, and as part of a community, gain strength from the pleasure of being outdoors and working with our hands.
  • We have been running for over 8 years and are self funded through grants and income; we are now seeking a replacement for our Garden Coordinator and Admin/Fundraising Coordinator (current contractor has worked for SCG for 5 years) to help the garden fulfil its charitable purposes.
  • The contractor will work closely with the Trustees and will need to be available to run the weekly open days (on Wednesdays) from 10am to 4pm.

  Responsibilities:

  • Managing the weekly open days at the Gardens, which includes:
    • Being friendly and welcoming to visitors and working with a range of volunteers of different abilities, some with additional support needs.
    • Planning and designing garden projects with the input of regular garden volunteers and the Trustees
    • Writing reports about the attendance and activities at each open day
    • Coordinating the stewardship, care and activities on the land (mostly raised beds and forest garden) and protected crops (currently three polytunnels and a greenhouse)
    • Conducting regular meetings of volunteers at the open days
    • Managing the outdoor kitchen area and stoves for providing food to the volunteers (focusing on Stonehill produce)
    • Identifying needs for the efficient running of the gardens/kitchen (e.g. tasks, equipment)
  • Looking after the financial sustainability of the garden which includes:
    • Researching and identifying relevant grants to apply for
    • Completing funding applications on behalf of the garden to cover revenue and capital costs, as discussed with the Trustees
    • Completing Grant reporting forms to a high level of accuracy, in accordance with grant funders’ requirements
    • Maintaining relationships with funders
    • Managing funding budgets
    • Managing operating costs and payments (e.g. insurance, email, domain, etc.)
    • Attending, chairing and minuting trustee meetings
  • Community outreach, which includes:
    • Reaching out to and maintaining relationships with local organisations and groups who could benefit from attending the garden
    • Advertising open days and events
    • Maintaining social media presence and website
    • Occasionally representing Stonehill at local events
    • Organising and advertising for the annual Harvest Meal

  Criteria: We are looking for the following criteria:

  • A deep interest in and working knowledge of sustainable growing and food preparation including organic horticulture, wildlife gardening and permaculture techniques
  • Capable, friendly and confident in welcoming and organising people with varying needs, backgrounds, points of view and gardening know how
  • Experience of funding applications with a proven track record of success
  • Strict attention to detail
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Capable and confident in welcoming and organising people with varying needs, backgrounds, points of view, and gardening know how
  • Experience with managing volunteers
  • Experience with collective decision making
  • Passion for community growing and for the work of Stonehill Community Garden
  • Excellent communication skills
