Department

You will be a member of the Small Holding Farm Team. You will report to - Head Gardener

Location

You will be located at The Small Holding. Address: Ranters Lane Kilndown Kent TN17 2SG

Employment Type

This is a full time role. Your working hours are: 30 hours per week over 4 days

The working day runs from 8:00-16:30, with a 60 minute unpaid lunch break. Occasional weekend watering duties may be required in May and June, for which time off in lieu is given.

Key Objective

Supporting the Head Gardener with the successful running of the Farm, growing high-quality vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers to supply the on-site restaurant at The Small Holding and our sister restaurant, Birchwood.

Main Duties

  • Following the planting and harvesting plans set by the Head Gardener.
  • Liaising regularly with the Head Chef regarding what is in season and available for the kitchen.
  • Contributing to the accurate keeping of harvest records for the Soil Association.
  • Ensuring the farm is kept presentable for visiting customers.
  • Support the Head Gardener in the running of the quarterly Grow The Seasons teaching course and delivery of Farm tours.
  • We also are home to chickens and ducks, so some animal husbandry will be required.

There is the opportunity to contribute to the planning of longer term development of the garden.

Essential Skills

  • Horticultural skills and experience, preferably in a kitchen garden or market garden setting
  • A passion for growing edible crops, both conventional and unusual
  • Knowledge of, or a keen interest in, organic and no-dig gardening practices
  • A horticultural qualification would be desirable.
  • Understanding of first aid

Salary

  • The salary band for this role is: £12.50 per hour
  • Salary may be adjusted based on previous experience and additional duties.
