Background

Good Food Scotland is on a mission to end hunger in Scotland. In October 2024 we opened the Threehills Community Supermarket in the Nitshill area of Pollok in Glasgow. Threehills includes an affordable shopping area, a community café and an advice hub. It aims to provide immediate financial relief for households on low incomes, by improving their access to affordable, nutritious food, while addressing some of the underlying issues which may have left them vulnerable to hunger and food insecurity. This is a flagship store and the first purpose-built store of its kind in Scotland. For more information on the project see https://www.threehillsglasgow.org/

About the role

We are looking for an individual who is passionate about creating an exceptional customer experience for the community of Greater Pollok and who is driven to help build and foster a positive community space at Threehills. You’ll be part of a small but enthusiastic team who work hard to make Threehills a thriving community hub. This role is challenging and fast-paced, replenishing stock, taking payments at the checkout, and having a good blether with Supermarket members! The role is very varied, working across the warehouse, shop floor and checkout desk as required to respond and adapt to customer needs in a flexible and proactive manner. Retail Assistants work closely with the Assistant Retail Manager but are expected to work independently and proactively.

The Supermarket has been open now for 4 months and growing rapidly and we are looking for a new retail assistant to join the Supermarket team. This is an exciting stage to join the Threehills staff team and would be well-suited to friendly individuals who thrive working within a small team and are keen to contribute towards the success of this new project. Previous experience within a customer-facing and/or retail role would be an asset but not strictly essential: full training and support will be provided and we place more importance on the skills that you can demonstrate, rather than sector specific experience. We are looking for people who are enthusiastic about the community work that we are doing, and with a willingness to learn, and who share the ethos and approach to our work.

We would highly encourage applications from local residents with knowledge of the Greater Pollok area, and from under-represented communities, particularly ethnic minority communities.

The Supermarket is open three days per week on Wednesdays 10am-4pm, Thursdays 12-6pm and Fridays 10am-4pm and the successful candidate will need to be flexible with availability across all of these days and times. Retail Assistants are entitled to a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.

Main responsibilities:

  • Ensuring an exceptional customer-centric experience, greeting customers and addressing their needs and concerns
  • Ensuring that Supermarket shelves remain fully stocked and well-presented throughout the day, taking the initiative to re-stock as and when necessary
  • Working on the till, cash handling and taking card payments
  • Checking pricing and updating EPOS system as required
  • Cleaning and tidying at the end of each shift, ensuring that the Supermarket and Storeroom remain clean and organised, implementing food safety and hygiene practice as per Environmental Health regulations and GFS policies
  • Assisting with receiving and unloading deliveries in the warehouse
  • Working alongside volunteers and assisting volunteers if necessary in their day-to-day tasks
  • Monitoring and reporting warehouse stock levels to the Assistant Retail Manager
  • Assisting with social media for the Supermarket (e.g., taking photos or videos)
  • Other tasks as required and directed
  • Attending GFS staff meetings if required and adhering to all GFS policies and procedures

  • Physically able to stack shelves and be on your feet most of the day
  • Great initiative and problem-solving skills, ability to think quickly on your feet
  • Great team-working skills
  • Organised and reliable approach

  • Previous experience working in a customer-facing and/or retail-based role
  • Experience and/or interest in community development, particularly community food
  • Experience in supporting individuals in financial hardship
  • Skills in minority languages spoken within the Greater Pollok community (e.g. Arabic, Punjabi, Urdu)

Job benefits
