Job description

Edible Landscapes London CIC are looking to hire a freelance facilitator who will continue to run and facilitate our weekly Forest Explorer sessions for parents and toddlers, which started in 2024.

Weekly sessions 10 – 2pm every Wednesday

Sessions planned to run until end of 2025 (with possibility of extension)

These sessions create a space for young children under the age of three, accompanied by parents/carers, to explore and be wild in nature. These sessions are free, and operate on a drop-in basis.

The Forest Explorers Facilitator will facilitate the weekly sessions, focused on child-led play, located primarily in woodland area within the site. The facilitator will fostering a welcoming environment, hosting imaginative, multisensory play experiences, using sticks, mud, basic utensils. Play activities will be facilitated within an understanding of the ethos of forest gardens, respecting the wildlife and habitats, and the needs of the plants. Children and parents may wish to help with basic forest garden tasks, such as watering plants, mulching, collecting and sowing seeds, propagating plants to take home. Facilitator will maintain respectful boundaries to host a regenerative, environmentally focussed ethos. A safe space where children can connect to nature and each other, where carers can meet other carers.

Responsibilities

  • Open the site in good time for the start of the session at 10am
  • Ensure site is safe, free of hazards, complies with Risk Assessment and site policies. Ensure the welfare of children, including shelter, and drinking water available.
  • Facilitate sessions, child-led play, primarily located in woodland area within the site.
  • Foster a respectful, regenerative, environmentally focussed ethos.
  • Site maintenance. Tidy up thoroughly after each session, including equipment, tools, wash any dishes. Update garden log book with note of attendees.
  • Facilitate a Whatsapp group, currently around 20 members. (Not all attend the sessions) Excellent, respectful communications, keeping carers and ELL's Project Coordinator (PC) informed of updates. Maintain a friendly and supportive environment.
  • Post updates on social media or bulletin board when appropriate, working with PC to ensure effective communications to parents and wider public.
  • Maintain good communications with ELL's Project Coordinator and Directors.
  • Manage a modest budget for materials, max £10 per session, working with PC to source materials. Provide invoice and receipts if appropriate.

Ideally we are looking for someone with the following skills and experience:

  • Experience working with children, preferably in outdoor setting - essential
  • Forest School / Outdoor Education training and experience
  • Knowledge and skills in forest gardening, permaculture, maintaining biodiversity and habitat, including initiatives within community settings
  • Experience working sensitively with marginalised groups, SEN
  • Skills in social media and Whatsapp group facilitation
  • Experience in managing a modest budget, sourcing materials, invoicing
  • Relevant first aid training and certificate - essential
  • Enhanced DBS certificate - essential
