Location: Threehills Community Supermarket, 409B Nitshill Rd, Glasgow G53 7BN

Hours: 22.5 hours per week, over 3–4 days, including evenings and weekends

Salary: £25,000–27,500 pro rata, dependent on experience

Contract: 12 months (extension subject to funding)

Start Date: 29th September 2025 (or as soon as possible)

Annual Leave: 25 days pro rata

Overview

The Community Cook will lead and manage kitchen operations at the Threehills Community Café, part of the Threehills Community Supermarket, which brings together:

  • A community supermarket for members, offering affordable, nutritious, and high-quality food.
  • A community café, providing hot meals, quality coffee, and a welcoming social space.
  • A community room, hosting wraparound support services, advice sessions, and wellbeing activities.

This role is central to creating and sustaining a friendly, inclusive hub where local people can access food, feel welcome, and connect with wider opportunities for wellbeing and financial security.

Main Responsibilities

The Community Cook’s key objective is to ensure the café runs smoothly and continues to offer high-quality meals and service to the community. Key tasks include:

  • Preparing fresh, nutritious meals (e.g., breakfast, soups, stews, sandwiches, curries, mince and totties etc) for up to 30 covers.
  • Overseeing daily kitchen operations, including opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintaining high standards of food quality, presentation, and consistency.
  • Managing kitchen stock and ordering supplies; developing new supplier relationships where needed.
  • Working with the Café Supervisor to shape menus that reflect local tastes and dietary needs.
  • Ensuring food hygiene and safety standards are met at all times.
  • Training, supervising, and supporting café and kitchen volunteers.
  • Managing the volunteer rota and arranging cover where needed.
  • Supporting the café team with serving, drinks, and other customer-facing duties when required.
  • Covering the Café Supervisor role during periods of annual leave or sickness.
  • Attending staff meetings and following organisational policies and procedures.
  • Any other relevant duties as required, including potential future evening community meals (funding-dependent).

Person Specification

Must-haves (essential):

  • Previous experience as a cook, ideally preparing meals for groups in a café, canteen, or community setting.
  • Ability to plan and prepare varied, nutritious meals to a high standard.
  • Experience leading and managing people, ideally in retail, hospitality, or a community environment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work with a wide range of people – staff, volunteers and community members.
  • Knowledge of health and safety and food hygiene standards, with a commitment to best practice. A Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate is desirable, or the willingness to obtain one within the first month of employment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage several priorities at once.

  • Experience working in a social enterprise, community project, or food-related organisation.
  • An understanding of the challenges communities face around food insecurity, poverty, and financial wellbeing.
