Job description

About this role:

You’ll join our team at Barnhill farm where we grow, pack and distribute local and organic produce. We moved here at the start of 2025 and have established our organic vegetable farm on 20 acres. We also rent a unit on site which we call our veg shed.

The post holder will lead the day to day operations of the veg shed which is the point of preparation and dispatch for our veg boxes and wholesale orders. You’ll oversee delivery of veg orders to our shops, wholesale customers and around 800 veg boxes per week.

You’ll lead a small team within the veg shed and work closely with the Directors, the Vegbox Customer Support Manager, our growers and delivery drivers.

There is a weekly  routine to the veg shed with Tuesday the day that most of our produce arrives from suppliers or is harvested on our farm. On Tuesday produce is checked in, shop orders prepared and preparation for Wednesday veg boxes begins. Hours are likely to be 9-5.

On Wednesday most veg boxes are packed and dispatched in the morning. The second half of the day is preparing for Thursday and this includes making up fruit bags, picking groceries and other items customers have ordered on top of their base boxes. Hours are currently 7am-3pm.

Thursday follows the same routine as Wednesday.

Friday starts the same way as Wednesday and Thursday with boxes being packed ready for dispatch on drivers delivery runs. Once prepared it is a day for a deep clean and preparation for the next week. Hours are likely 7am-3pm.

A fifth day may be available subject to applicants interest and this may be a Saturday or Monday and involve working a market stall or assisting on the farm.

Duties Include:

  • Full practical involvement in all activities while also overseeing tasks and delegating them among the team.
  • Stock management and rotation - Maintain stock control of the online shop and ensure required packaging and consumables are available.
  • Management of a small team including scheduling, delegation and working to improve the overall performance of the team.
  • Hold short regular team briefings looking back at the previous week/day and ahead to the coming days to ensure quality control, learn from mistakes, foresee issues and improve.
  • Ensuring temperature control and food safety is maintained.
  • Overseeing waste management, arranging collections of recycling, pallets and bales as required.
  • Ensuring the veg shed and yard are kept organised and tidy.
  • Responsibility for checking over our vans on a regular basis and tasks like arranging tyre replacements.
  • Working with Directors and the Customer Manager to continuously improve the service over time, improve customer satisfaction and grow the service.
  • Contributing to our social media with posts and stories from the veg shed.

Person Specification:

We’re looking for  someone who can undertake the duties above and that person could come from a range of backgrounds with different experiences. It is a slightly unusual job so we welcome diverse applications that may not have experience of all aspects of the role.

We would like someone who enjoys their vegetables and shares our passion for local organic veg.

It would be desirable if you had experience of  working in a warehouse, factory or farm setting, as would experience of driving a van, forklift or tractor.
