Sessional Community Gardener

Part-time, up to 8 hours a week, £14.50 - £16 an hour

At Cultivate London, we help communities plant gardens together, spreading green skills, togetherness and wellbeing through our urban communities.   

Our Community and Young People team are looking for a friendly and inclusive community gardener to lead our Wednesday volunteer session at the Salopian Garden. We are looking for a passionate gardener who especially enjoys working with people from all walks of life. 

Ideally, you will have a Horticulture Level 2 qualification or be a keen amateur gardener/allotment holder. We value previous experience growing edible crops, working with community groups and/or children especially in a garden setting.

You will be responsible for leading the sessions at our kitchen garden, facilitating a positive, friendly group that is welcoming to all and where volunteers feel valued and invested in the garden. The Salopian Garden is laid out with space for growing fruit and veg, greenhouse and polytunnel, fruit trees and flower beds. You will be responsible for developing a planting plan in conjunction with the volunteers to produce fruit and vegetables for them to enjoy at home and share with the wider community.

We’ll offer you a supportive environment and appropriate training to develop your skills. The role is initially offered up to 8 hours, one day a week with the opportunity to grow your role to include more days a week as the charity’s program expands. 

The role is part-time for up to 8 hours a week, £14.50 - £16 an hour, depending on experience, on Wednesdays based in our garden in Isleworth, Hounslow.  

Job Description

  • Leading our Wednesday volunteer session
    • Providing a varied program of activities including growing fruit and veg and maintaining the garden.
    • Diversifying activities to suit the varied needs of our volunteers
    • Facilitating a positive, accepting and friendly group
    • Taking time to chat with individuals
  • Working with the Director of Community and Young People who has responsibility for the site and the volunteer session
    • Assisting with the gardens community program
    • Assisting with the maintenance program for the garden space and buildings
  • Supporting learning for work experience placements 
  • Basic housekeeping of facilities
  • Collecting environmental and community impact and demographic data where necessary.
  • Communicating with our volunteers via WhatsApp facilitating a positive community
  • Contribute content to our social media channels and future newsletters
  • Reporting to the Director of Young People and Community at Cultivate London
  • Attending Cultivate London team meetings when required.  

Essential Experience and Attributes 

  • Horticulture Level 2 qualification or keen amateur gardener
  • Love working with people with an outgoing and friendly personality
  • Enjoy growing plants and keen to develop and share your skills
  • Happy to work outside all year
  • Awareness of Safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults
  • Awareness of Risk assessment and Health and Safety procedures 
  • Full enhanced DBS check or willingness to undergo a check
  • First aid training or willingness to take training on appointment

Desirable Experience and Attributes

  • Previous responsibility for a garden space for over a year
  • Experience working with children’s or community groups
  • Experience running a community garden
  • General experience demonstrating practical skills 
  • Local to West London preferred
  • Experience contributing content to social media and newsletters

  • This is initally a one day a week role, but as the charity’s needs change it has scope to become permanent.
