Job description

Lead-Grower Position Norwich FarmShare

Norwich FarmShare (NFS) is looking to hire a lead-grower to carry the project into the 2026 growing season and beyond!

The new team member would take on the responsibility of running all aspects of the market garden, alongside an assistant grower and team of volunteers.

Who We Are

Norwich FarmShare is a Community Supported Agriculture farm with a Community Benefit Society legal structure. NFS is a periurban project based on the edge of Norwich, and currently produces veg bags for about 100 households a week.

The site is a 2.5 acre peri-urban field on the south east edge of Norwich 4 miles from the city centre. The site has two polytunnels plus a propagation tunnel, and the whole field is surrounded by a rabbit fence.  There is mains water and electricity on site, and a bore-hole for irrigation. NFS is not certified organic, but is chemical free and aims to be low dig.

We are privileged to have a very strong community involved with the farm and many volunteers who attend a weekly volunteer session.

Responsibilities of the lead grower

  • Crop planning and produce coordination - growing to fulfil veg bag orders each week with produce from on our own site (or ordering in if necessary). This includes administrating veg bag orders each week via our Ooooby site.
  • Managing the budget and cash flow as it relates to the site - ordering seed, compost and equipment, as well as any grant funding relating to volunteering and education or site development.
  • Coordinating volunteer days (currently Tuesdays), ensuring that NFS is a welcoming space for gardeners of all levels of experience.

These responsibilities are supported by our existing (fantastic) assistant grower.

Essential skills & Experience

  • Over two years market gardening or relevant work experience.
  • Understanding of crop planning, rotations, propagation, and harvest techniques.
  • Has compassionate and professional communication skills and enjoys working with other people as well as lone working.
  • Ability to manage your own workload
  • Ability to work with members of the public, of all levels of horticultural skills and experience, to deliver an enjoyable and educational volunteer session each week.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • A full UK driving licence
  • Has some form of horticultural education and/or has taken a deal of responsibility in previous roles
  • May have been involved in the organisation of veg bags/boxes previously

Start Date, Hours & Pay

  • January 2026 (an earlier start date is negotiable)

  • Four or five seven-hour days a week at £13.50 an hour (dependant on experience of candidate)
  • The working pattern is adaptable for the right candidate and with a degree of autonomous decision making
  • Based on a four day work week 17 days of annual leave
  • Based on a four day work week 8 days of paid sick pay before statutory

Who You Are

We are looking for the following characteristics in a new member of our team:

  • You enjoy working with people and are excellent at teaching inexperienced members of the public about growing food
  • You’re patient and able to work with a range of different people
  • You use open and accessible language, while being kind and good humoured
  • You have strong communication skills, but are able to do a certain amount of autonomous decision making.
  • You are able to manage all aspects of production, enjoy physical work, and are happy to work outside in all weathers throughout the whole year.

Interview Process

Potential candidates will be asked to attend an interview. Ideally this will be in person but there is scope to do it online if you live further afield. Following the interview, there will be a paid trial day for shortlisted candidates.

Please contact us if you have any preliminary questions. The deadline for applications is October 31st 2025.

We look forward to hearing from you!
