Job description

We’re looking for a practical, motivated and values-driven individual to help develop our on-farm milling enterprise — transforming heritage and population wheats, and other organically grown crops, into high-quality flours and products for local bakers and retailers.

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a regenerative, stock-free organic farm working towards a fairer, more sustainable food system. You’ll be helping to build a small but significant local food initiative rooted in ecological principles and community connection.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain the mill, granary and associated equipment in line with health, safety and environmental standards.
  • Mill, blend and sift grains according to demand, ensuring consistent quality and traceability.
  • Oversee quality control, keeping all grains and flours clean, dry, and contaminant-free.
  • Manage stock control of grains, packaging and milled products, tracking key metrics such as moisture content.
  • Package and label products accurately and in compliance with food regulations.
  • Coordinate deliveries and communicate with accounts for accurate invoicing.
  • Engage with bakers, retailers and customers to understand their needs and build reliable sales relationships.
  • Develop systems and procedures for smooth, efficient operation of the mill and granary.
  • Contribute to the farm’s wider planning, agroecological management and operations, including composts, teas , soil health and more.

About You

You’ll be someone who brings a mix of hands-on skill, curiosity, and care for people and the planet. You might have previous experience in milling, baking, grain cleaning or organic farming — or simply the drive to learn.

We’re especially interested in people who:

  • Have a practical understanding of organic and regenerative agriculture, the soil and gut microbiome, and sourdough baking.
  • Are well-organised, proactive and comfortable working independently.
  • Have some sales, marketing or customer relationship skills, ideally within food or farming.
  • Hold a UK driving licence and, ideally, some land-based training or qualifications.
  • Can support the farm’s Soil Association accreditation through good record keeping and admin.
  • Share the ethos and principles of The Fold, and are eager to grow personally and professionally.

Outcomes & Impact

  • The milling enterprise becomes financially sustainable, supporting the wider farm.
  • Sales and customer satisfaction increase through quality, reliability and community engagement.
  • Waste is minimised, and the mill gains an excellent reputation for integrity and craftsmanship
