Job description

School Farm CSA is looking for a seasonal worker to work 3 days a week from the start of April to the end of September 2026. We are a 3 acre, 100 box a week CSA scheme based in the heart of the Dartington estate, near Totnes. We are a team of three - two year-round joint head growers and our trainee from last year is staying on seasonally for 2026. We do boxes all year round, aiming to be fully self sufficient from June through December. We do some wholesale through summer, mainly salad, and run three sub-businesses - making and selling our own ferments, running workshops from our community space, and selling plants to a local farm shop. We also grow commercial seed crops for Vital Seeds and Real Seeds. We host a volunteer day every Thursday, as well as plant sales, open days, and our big annual harvest party at the end of September. We try to strike a balance between being a productive, commercial farm and being a vibrant community project that lets people connect with growing their food. We are looking for someone who is going to throw themselves into every aspect of what we do, wants to grow lots of food, and who will enjoy being part of a strongly community connected farm.

The Person

We are looking for someone hard working and proactive, who pays attention to detail and can work effectively and quickly. The person must have a good understanding of organic horticulture to the point that they could do most basic jobs (propagating, planting, weeding, meshing etc) independently if needed, although we generally like to work collectively. You must be physically fit, and happy to work in all weathers. Any experience in broader farm skills (use of machinery, BCS tractor, maintenance, building etc) would be valuable but not essential.

As a seasonal worker, you will not have oversight of any area of the farm work. What we are looking for is someone who has the basic skills to turn up at the farm at the start of spring and get stuck straight in. You will be expected to turn your hand to whatever needs doing that day, so flexibility and a willing attitude are important. Finally, the ideal candidate would have a strong interest in food, cooking and eating - this is a really important part of what we do!

The Job

The contract will run from the beginning of April to the end of September. You will work 3 days a week, preferably Monday, Wednesday and Friday, although we are open to discussing days that would fit the right candidate. We work for 7 hours a day, from 7:30am-3:30pm, with an hour lunch break that we take turns to cater for. We pay the real living wage, which is £13.45/hour from April 2026, with statutory holiday, pension contributions and sick pay. You will receive a weekly large veg box, and discounted rates on our other farm produce such as ferments.

You will be participating in all the jobs at the farm, from propagation through to harvesting, as well as all the other things we do - plant sale packing and labelling, seed production, event preparation, ferment production. This could include BCS tractor work such as flail mowing, rotavating etc and we would support anyone to learn how to do this.

Application information

Please send a CV (max 2 pages A4) and a cover letter (max 1 page A4) explaining why you feel you would be a good candidate for the job to info@schoolfarmcsa.org.uk. The deadline for applications is 31st January 2026. For more details of our farm, see our website at www.schoolfarmcsa.org.uk.
