Job description

Experienced Livestock Assistant

  • Location: Sussex Farm
  • Full-time. Hands-on Animal Welfare & other farming roles
  • Pathway: Potential to step into become a tenant farmer position at the farm
  • Hours: 8-4pm Mon – Friday (fixed term contract with option to extend)
  • Available: To start as soon as possible

Why this role exists

My Little Farm is building a meaningful alternative to the commercial food system - one rooted in land stewardship, animal welfare, and food sovereignty. Our members aren’t customers; they’re co-owners of the land and the mission.

We’re looking for a Livestock Assistant to join our core farming team at our flagship Sussex farm. Needed to start as soon as possible.  You’ll begin by feeding and managing our livestock, laying hens, broilers, pigs and sheep, with the opportunity to become a tenant farmer on the land and manage your own livestock

We’re starting small, but our ambitions are big. This role is for someone who wants to support the livestock model now with a potential scale it with us across 1,000 acres of regenerative farmland, feeding 1,000 Founding Members plus a 20% surplus to support 200 families in need

From Sussex, we will replicate what works, region by region, and ultimately each region will also bring the Sovereign Village vision to life.

The mission you’ll be joining

We exist to give families food sovereignty - access to a trusted, deeply nutritious food supply they can rely on, and a place they can belong to. We’re restoring land, rebuilding ecosystems, and proving that farming can be ethical, resilient, and community-owned. If you want your work to matter at the level of soil, animals, and society, this is that kind of role.

What you’ll be responsible for :

You will take ownership of feeding and moving our animals

  • Heritage laying hens Broilers
  • Pasture-raised pigs
  • Sheep
  • Supporting the farming infrastructure (fencing etc)
  • Potential support of vegetable plots also

We are looking for someone who has experience of managing farm animals. We have an on-site farmer who will guide and support you in the role, as needed.

Your focus will be on practical, repeatable, animal-first systems: calm stockmanship, tight rotations, infrastructure that works, and routines that make life better for animals and humans.

Key responsibilities

Regenerative livestock delivery

  • Plan, manage, and execute livestock operations aligned with regenerative principles and My Little Farm standards.
  • Implement rotational grazing / pasture management that improves soil health and biodiversity.
  • Build humane, low-stress systems for health, welfare, breeding, and finishing.

Day-to-day livestock management

  • Lead daily operations across poultry and pigs (and later cattle/sheep): feeding, health checks, moves, records, and seasonal infrastructure.
  • Manage temporary electric fencing and paddock systems as part of rotational and multi-species grazing.
  • Oversee safe use and maintenance of farm machinery and livestock kit.

You’ll thrive here if you...

  • Have strong, practical livestock skills
  • Hold high welfare standards and calm, capable stockmanship
  • Understand regenerative pasture-based systems and want to keep learning.
  • Are confident with electric fencing, rotations, and hands-on field systems.
  • Are organised, proactive, and communicate clearly with a small core team.
  • Are comfortable with basic digital/admin tools for records and planning.
  • Take health and safety seriously and lead by example.
  • Love building something that lasts, not just maintaining what exists.

Working dogs welcome; UK driving licence required; additional tickets like ATV/telehandler useful but not essential.)
