Job description

Penninghame House is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Seasonal Gardener to support the Head Gardener in the ongoing development and maintenance of the historic walled garden and greenhouses. This is a hands-on role suited to someone with a genuine interest in horticulture who enjoys working as part of a small team in a beautiful historic setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with the maintenance and development of the walled garden
  • Working in and caring for the greenhouses, including propagation and plant care
  • General garden maintenance: planting, weeding, pruning, and lawn care
  • Supporting seasonal tasks as directed by the Head Gardener

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Practical gardening experience (professional or strong amateur)
  • A positive attitude and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Good attention to detail and pride in high standards

Desirable:

  • Horticultural qualification or training
  • Interest in historic gardens and traditional gardening techniques

This is a seasonal role and will run from March to the end of September.

Accomodation with all bills & utilities included can be provided if required.

About Penninghame Estate

Penninghame Estate is a working estate in the southwest of Scotland, at the foot of the Galloway hills. It boasts 8 holiday rentals, a gym, distillery, cook school, working livery, and a 1.5 acre walled garden. Whilst not certified yet, the walled garden operates to organic standards, with a focus on soil health and plant biodiversity. After a few years without being worked, the garden and glasshouses are currently in the process of being brought back to life.
