Job description
Square Mile Farms is on a mission to reconnect people with food. We put vertical growing systems into urban areas, such as corporate offices, co working spaces and apartment buildings, so people can grow and consume their own zero miles, ultra fresh salad greens and herbs where they live and work. We are growing quickly and need help managing our urban farms. This is an exciting opportunity to join an environmentally conscious start up and work closely with plants growing in the city.
We are looking for someone to support a specific site as we expand the scope of plants that we manage from purely edible to traditional, indoor and outdoor horticulture. This role would start on 1 day per week with the option to expand to 2 to 3 days per week.
What you’ll be doing within the operations team:
Manage and maintain plants, trees, flowers, and edible plants in indoor and outdoor settings
This includes watering, pruning, fertilizing, cleaning, monitoring plant health, diagnosing pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies; suggesting and applying appropriate treatments.
Prepare and amend soils or growing media suitable for containers and compacted urban soils.
Assist with landscape design implementation and seasonal planting schedules.
Support composting, recycling, and sustainable waste management practices.
Maintain records of plant inventories, maintenance schedules, and treatment applications.
Engage with and educate the on site community
Collaborate closely and effectively with the onsite SMF and client team
Requiredments:
Knowledge of plant identification, soil science, and basic botany.
Understanding of integrated pest management (IPM) and sustainable horticultural practices.
Physical stamina to be on your feet for most of the day and perform lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
Basic record-keeping and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
High level of professionalism and able to represent the company well in your communication
Proactive, positive and constructive problem solving attitude
Preferred Qualifications:
Qualification in horticulture, agriculture, environmental science, or a related field.
Previous experience in landscaping, nursery work, greenhouse management, or urban farming.
What SMF can offer you:
Chance to work for an exciting, growing, purpose driven start up
Opportunities to grow with the business should you want to
A unique proposition (we’re the only ones doing this!)
To spend a lot of time with fantastic edible plants
Volunteering opportunities
Lots of sustainable, fresh produce to take home
Cycle to work scheme (if employed)

Well being budget (if employed)
