Job description

To be actively involved in, and oversee all aspects of the day to day operation of the Dairy which includes:

  • Producing quality products for sale in the Newton Dee Store and for the community as well as local markets.
  • Being responsible for liaising internally and with customers about priorities and supply of products
  • Facilitating a good and satisfying work environment and atmosphere
  • Creating a sense of meaningful work for all members of the Dairy team
  • Being actively involved in the training, supervision and development of both volunteers and people with learning disabilities.
  • Taking responsibility for setting and maintaining standards in keeping with current hygiene regulations
  • Participating in and contributing to all relevant meetings, such as the land team meeting

You will be actively engaged in and responsible for the management and day to day operation of the Dairy, and for supporting all those working in the Dairy in the fulfilment of their tasks. You will also be a part of the overall Newton Dee Farm team and collaborate with the rest of the team which will require a level of flexibility and practical involvement that is required by the nature of working on a farm.

Your tasks will include the following:

  • To prepare and set up the Dairy for the working day.
  • To ensure the quality of our products by:
    • Maintaining the hygiene of the workplace
    • Supervising correct processes and procedures
    • Supervising care of the final product (covering all aspects including food safety, quality control and testing of products)
    • Keeping records to ensure traceability and compliance with HACCP and other quality assurance schemes, updating documentation as required.
  • To pack and organise the dispatch of products internally and for commercial customers.
  • To ensure a safe working environment.
  • To lead, motivate and support all Dairy team members to maintain and develop their practical and other skills. This might include attending annual reviews of people supported to work in the Dairy.
  • To be aware of individuals’ emotional needs and respond to these as appropriate.
  • To work constructively with those who carry responsibility for practical issues and for matters concerning individuals in the Dairy.
  • To be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all equipment.
  • To create weekly schedules as required by the milk quantities and the team of workers that is available to the Dairy.
  • To explore possibilities for new products and routines as and when these arise and in discussion with all relevant working groups.
  • To participate in milking and dairy herd related tasks.
  • To engage with tasks and responsibilities in the context of Newton Dee Camphill Community in order to foster an energetic and productive environment.
  • Develop an enthusiasm for cheese making and a willingness to learn new processes if required.

Newton Dee Farm is an integral part of our Community. It is a biodynamic grass based mixed farm (dairy cows, beef, sheep, pigs, poultry) and produces milk, meat and eggs for the community with the involvement of a team of 14 people, some of whom have additional support needs. We aim to produce high quality products in a sustainable manner.
