Job description

Earthsong Seeds is a small, values-led herb seed company combining a working plant nursery with a growing e-commerce seed business. We are entering a new phase of restructuring and renewal, and are seeking an experienced Operations & Growth Lead to take on day-to-day leadership and guide the business through its next stage of development.

This is a pivotal role within a small but complex enterprise. The successful candidate will oversee operational coordination, team management and commercial performance across both the nursery and online sales platform. A structured handover period will be provided, with mentoring support during transition.

The Role

  • Lead day-to-day operations across nursery, seed shed and e-commerce activity
  • Coordinate production, stock management and sales performance across the business
  • Provide strategic oversight of marketing and commercial activity, ensuring campaigns and communications align with stock, capacity and growth objectives
  • Manage and support a small team through a period of transition
  • Drive sustainable sales growth aligned with operational capacity
  • Monitor financial performance and contribute to budgeting and forecasting
  • Ensure systems (stock, sales, digital tools) are accurate and well integrated
  • Maintain alignment between horticultural production and commercial strategy
  • Identify operational challenges early and develop practical, well-judged solutions that strengthen resilience and efficiency

Skills & Experience

We are looking for someone who brings a combination of the following strengths:

  • Practical experience in horticulture, herb growing, seed production or a related land-based field
  • Experience working within a small business environment
  • Confidence engaging with sales performance and contributing to thoughtful, sustainable growth
  • Experience shaping, planning or delivering marketing activity within a small business
  • Familiarity with, or willingness to develop confidence in, e-commerce systems and online sales
  • An ability to interpret sales and financial information to inform decision-making
  • Experience supporting or coordinating a small team
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise across competing demands
  • Independence, sound judgement and resilience
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach to navigating complex or evolving challenges

No candidate is expected to arrive with equal strength in all areas. We are open to applicants who bring depth in some of these and the willingness to grow into others over time.

Who This Role Would Suit

This role would suit someone who enjoys holding responsibility in a small enterprise, can move comfortably between strategic thinking and hands-on realities, and is motivated by contributing to a meaningful, ecological and horticultural mission. It is a senior position and requires confidence, initiative and sound judgement.

Hours: 4 days per week  Location: Cameley, near Temple Cloud, North Somerset Salary: £24,000–£28,000 per annum for 4 days per week (equivalent to £30,000–£35,000 full-time), depending on experience.

We are based in the Chew Valley just south of Bristol, where we have approximately 12 acres of land, which includes the no-dig herb beds, the beginnings of a forest garden and wild meadow.
