Job description

A rare opportunity to shape an ambitious agroecological farm from the ground up

At a Glance

  • Farm Manager on a 120‑acre mixed agroecology farm in West Berkshire
  • Hands‑on leadership role managing day‑to‑day operations and a small team
  • Permanent, full‑time position
  • Competitive salary depending on experience
  • Start date: end of April

Position Overview

Manor Farm is a 120‑acre, early‑stage agroecology project with big ambitions. We’re looking for a practical, entrepreneurial and hands‑on Farm Manager to help shape the next phase of our development.

Current enterprises include a small sheep flock, a young cider orchard, and an organic tree and hedge nursery, alongside a start‑up horse stud (not part of this role). Several new enterprises and diversification opportunities are on the horizon.

You will work closely with Karen, who founded the farm in 2021, to lead the team and build the systems that will underpin our long‑term success — from grazing infrastructure and livestock enterprises to direct‑to‑market sales and ecological monitoring. The goal is clear: regenerate soil, build a thriving mixed farm, and reach financial break‑even by 2027/28.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in early‑stage environments, enjoys problem‑solving, and is energised by building systems where little currently exists. The farm is well‑funded, open to innovation, and committed to demonstrating that small farms can be sustainable, joyful and regenerative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Livestock & Daily Operations
  • Pasture & Regenerative Land Management
  • Farm Maintenance and Improvements
  • Planning, Business & Compliance
  • Sales & Market Development

Suggested Experience & Skills

Desirable Skills & Background

  • 3–7 years’ livestock management experience (multi‑species preferred)
  • Strong practical experience with rotational/ holistic grazing
  • Confident operating tractors and farm machinery
  • Solid understanding of UK pasture ecology
  • Experience with livestock record‑keeping and movement regulations
  • Physically fit and comfortable working outdoors year‑round
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to work independently

Desirable Qualifications

  • Training in regenerative agriculture or holistic grazing (e.g., Savory Institute principles)
  • Agricultural or land‑based qualification
  • Experience with UK rural grants or stewardship schemes
  • Direct meat marketing experience
  • Basic financial management skills

Personal Attributes

  • Practical, solutions‑oriented and adaptable
  • Comfortable in a start‑up environment with evolving systems
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Deep commitment to soil regeneration and animal welfare
  • Commercially aware and financially disciplined

We recognise that no candidate will tick every box. A positive, can‑do attitude and a willingness to learn are the qualities we value most. We are a small, passionate team with a shared commitment to making this farm thrive.

Working Conditions

  • Full‑time role with seasonal variation in hours
  • Outdoor physical work
  • Some weekend and early‑morning duties
  • 20 days holiday and bank holidays – may need to work some bank holidays for TOIL

Compensation

  • Competitive salary starting at £40,000 based on experience
  • Access to farm produce
  • Professional development opportunities in regenerative agriculture
