Job description

Salary: £26,000 pro rata

Contract: Fixed term, May 2026 to March 2027. 22.5hr/week spread over 4 days.

Location: Northern Roots, Oldham, OL8 2BJ

Northern Roots is transforming 160 acres of urban green space into a destination for learning, leisure and growing. In autumn 2026 we’ll open a brand-new Welcome Building, Forestry Skills Centre and four more acres of Urban Farm.

We’re looking for an experienced Community Gardener to manage our established first phase of urban farm – 1.2 acre Brook Mill Gardens.

The Community Gardener will have the unique opportunity to lead volunteer sessions as well as support our Natural Health Service, developing anti‑cancer forest garden, wildflower and meditation areas, ensuring the space is accessible and maintains its natural theraputic qualities. The Community Gardener will also support the wider Land Team across our site.

This part of the role blends practical land skills with relational sensitivity, helping to ensure our outdoor spaces are held with care and intention.

This role is 22.5hr/week spread over 4 days. Please note, working days can be discussed but as the charity works towards opening the Welcome Building, the post holder will have to transition to a weekend day for a session.
