Job description
Join us as a grower at Soul Farm
The role: We are looking for a grower to work with our dedicated and high energy team for the season, with potential for an extended position on reduced winter hours after October.
Hours: 4 days a week with the possibility of some extra market days. Tuesday - Wednesday 8am-4:30pm, Thursday-Friday approx. 7am-3:30pm.
Remuneration: We are a real living wage employer and you will receive £13.45 an hour on payroll with the option to join our pension scheme. Plus, a free, weekly veg box and discounts on other shop items.
Market gardening duties:
Taking part in all aspects of vegetable growing duties, including, sowing, planting, bed preparation, weeding, and general farm maintenance.
Harvesting with care and speed, ensuring our high quality is strictly adhered to and we are getting the best produce out to our community.
Processing and packing crops for distribution via our veg box scheme, market stall and wholesale customers.
Participating cooperatively in team work, following instructions where needed.
Getting involved in other aspects of the farm’s development and maintenance.
Thinking on your feet and making effective decisions on the fly.
Lifting heavy bags of compost or crates of veg (you need to be physically fit and strong).
Working outside in all weathers.
Building things and handiness to DIY.
Working at the timings of farming - farming doesn’t fit the normal working week.
Organising thoroughly and precisely.
Remaining aware of what needs to be done around the farm (things to be weeded, put away, trellised, and repaired) and being proactive about these things.
Work on your own at times, reliably and with self-motivation.
Liaising communicatively with the directors and head grower on a daily basis.
Other tasks may include:
Working on our market stall on Saturdays.
IT and social media skills. We are a digital company too. We don’t all live on our sites and we require online communication through various platforms.
Coming alongside some volunteers to ensure that they are picking things properly, being safe with equipment. You will assist on volunteer days, make people feel welcome, assist people in their jobs and ensure best practice is undertaken.
Taking a full and active role in the development of Soul Farm.
Required Criteria:
Previous work outdoors and one year minimum experience in market gardening, growing or farming.
High level of fitness and able to carry heavy crates of vegetables, work physically on the farm for up to 8 hours per day.
Finding enjoyment in repetitive tasks such as weeding, trellising tomatoes, etc.
Able to work quickly, efficiently and to deadlines - we have a huge workload on the farm and we need people who can cope with this.
Basic IT skills, competency with spreadsheets, and good record keeping etiquette.
Commitment to equality and equity - in fact, enthusiastic about social justice.
Personable and willing to be flexible.
Attention to detail and diligence.
Punctuality.
Able to work from their own initiative, sometimes on their own with high motivation.
Working well as part of a collaborative team.
Full UK driving licence without points and willing to drive a van.
