Job description

The Friends of Agnes Riley Gardens are looking for a Project Facilitator and Volunteer Coordinator to deliver weekly gardening sessions from May - September. The successful candidate will also support the Friends to build connections with local groups and secure ongoing volunteers. 

Funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, this role focuses on creating a welcoming, inclusive, and well-maintained environment where local residents, groups, and schools can connect with nature, build skills, and strengthen community relationships.

Key Responsibilities

Community Gardening Sessions & Activities (Primary Focus)

  • Plan and deliver weekly hands-on gardening sessions for local residents, community groups, and schools
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment for all participants
  • Adapt sessions to support a range of needs, including neurodivergent participants and those who benefit from sensory or structured outdoor activities
  • Share gardening knowledge in a practical, engaging, and accessible way
  • Support set-up and pack-down for sessions and events
  • Work with the Friends of Agnes Riley Gardens to identify and engage local groups to participate in sessions

 Volunteer Support & Coordination

  • Support the recruitment of local volunteers
  • Encourage volunteers to take part in sessions and garden maintenance
  • Provide informal guidance and support during activities
  • Help foster a sense of shared ownership and stewardship of the garden

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience delivering hands-on, group-based gardening or outdoor sessions
  • Experience in community gardening or food growing
  • Experience working with volunteers / Friends of groups 
  • Experience designing and delivering sessions for diverse  and delivering sessions for participants with diverse needs
  • Interest in biodiversity, sustainability, or nature-based work
  • Confidence working with a wide range of people and community groups
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to create inclusive environments
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative
  • Basic gardening knowledge or willingness to learn
  • Enhanced DBS / DBS certificate  + UTR

Friends of Agnes Riley Gardens is a group of local residents who work with Lambeth Council to manage and maintain Agnes Riley Gardens, a park located in Clapham/Balham. In addition to supporting with maintaining the garden, the Friends lead management of the comminity agrden located in the park.
