Job description

Tuppenny Barn Gardener

To assist the Head Gardener in all horticulture gardening duties relating to the growing of seasonal organic produce for the outdoor classroom. To be part of the cropping team preparing fruit, vegetables and herbs for the shop and other charitable activitities

To assist the Lead Practitioner in Sow and Thrive workshops

Key responsibilities

  • Seed sowing and all other forms of propagation of fruit, vegetables and herbs
  • Maintenance of all areas of the outdoor classroom in conjunction with the gardening team – this will include planting, weeding, pruning and other basic gardening tasks
  • Assisting in the irrigation of all plants on site including protected crops within the 2 polytunnels
  • Preparing plants to sell in the shop and responsibility for the plant sales area
  • Weekly cropping of seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs as part of the cropping team.
  • Preparation of the crops into packaging or similar ready to display in the shop
  • Maintenance of gardening records including mandatory information as required by the Soil Association
  • Assist with compost production and maintenance as required
  • Support the Tuppenny Barn gardening volunteers giving guidance and instructions
  • Assist the Head Gardener in ordering seeds and seasonal planning and preparation
  • Prepare growing beds ready for planting
  • Keep tools, equipment and storage areas clean, organised and safe
  • Ensure outdoor spaces are tidy, safe and accessible
  • Assist the Lead Practitioner with Sow and Thrive workshops
  • Deputise for the Head Gardener in periods of leave  

Nest Pension - 23 days leave (pro rata) plus public holidays

Tuppenny Barn is a 20 year charity based on a Soil Association organic smallholding. Food education via school and College visits, is its main charitable activity for approx 2000 young people annually. Horticulture therapy is its second charitable activity currently facilitating 6 green therapy programmes including one for young carers and another for vulnerable female veterans. We run a twice weekly produce shop weekly and hire out our sustainable education centre to the local community
