Job description

The Role:

Teaching basic gardening skills to our women only gardening class: How to use organic methods to prepare the ground, sow seeds, transplant seedlings, plant, cultivate, tend and harvest vegetables, herbs, flowers and fruit. How to maintain existing flowers, shrubs and trees in the Centre’s front space, rear garden and street planters,

To run regular nature based creative activities integrated as part of the sessions and to lead external trips for the group.

Possibility to run extra sessions if you have seasonal skills such as foraging, making natural cosmetics, jam, chutney, cordial or Christmas wreaths.

Time and Date: 

  • Weekly workshops at West Hampstead Women’s Centre (40 weeks per year, 3 hours per session, on either a Tuesday or Thursday morning to suit applicant.) £22 per hour.

Fixed-term contract with possibility to renew - June to November 2026 excluding August.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a combination of practical and theoretical gardening sessions to a group of women learners (including vulnerable and older ladies) at the centre.
  • Design and follow a seasonal vegetable growing plan and a yearly work schedule for the shrubs, flowers, herbs and trees.
  • Plan interesting and informative nature based creative activities and sessions, including trips to other gardens and growing spaces and rainy day sessions.
  • Help create a positive and supportive atmosphere in which women are encouraged to communicate and respect each other.
  • Encourage participants to improve their confidence and learn new horticultural and gardening skills while meeting other women in the community.
  • Keep the spaces tidy and presentable, in a weed free and cultivated state, ensuring they are suitable for general use by the centre users.
  • Work closely with centre staff on the general garden layout, maintain resources and equipment and provide a list of new items needed.
  • Help advertise and promote the Gardening Project. 

Person Specification:

  • Hold a gardening qualification or have considerable experience teaching gardening and food growing. Would also suit a student in the third year of their diploma who would like to gain experience.
  • Well organised and reliable, with excellent time-management and planning skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Positive and energetic attitude.
  • Experience of planning seasonally appropriate group activities and sessions.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices.
  • Desirable: Experience of working with community groups and/or volunteers, including vulnerable women and women from a variety of cultural and religious backgrounds and abilities.
