Shop Manager
Main purpose
To Manage the business operations of Dig-In Shop, including
To develop and deliver sales and footfall in line with the budgets and strategies set by the Management Committee (MC), ensure a healthy trading profit annually, and continually develop the shop business.
To manage and lead the staff and the volunteer teams, so that all individuals have a positive experience and can flourish in the Dig-in community.
To ensure this community business has a welcoming atmosphere at all times, providing a positive customer experience, fostering local community and business engagement and building strong relationships with local suppliers and producers.
To ensure compliance with health and safety, environmental health, fire and safety legislation and current and emerging employment law.
To provide excellent advice and support to the Management Committee, the decision-making body of Dig-in.
Key tasks
The Shop Manager will work closely with the part-time Deputy Manager and Shop Supervisors to deliver the key tasks as follows:
Ensure shop is always well stocked to maximise sales and serve the community, reflecting the seasonal nature of food, local annual community calendar and excellent relationships with local suppliers.
Maintain a consistently high standard of presentation, including displays/visual standards, stock condition, stock control and general cleanliness
Meet sales targets, work within budgets.
Manage full staff and volunteer teams, running recruitment, induction, training, rotas shift supervision and performance management to ensure we bring out the best in our diverse group of people.
Ensure Dig-In is a welcoming and friendly environment for customers, staff and Volunteers.
Maintain efficient and accurate administrative and financial administration systems and procedures and ensure there are systems to manage ordering, stock control and pricing, banking, paying invoices.
Work with Dig-In’s accountants, Treasurer and Finance Assistant to provide accurate monthly management reports.
Provide regular reporting on shop operations to the Management Committee (MC) and any further information requested so that the MC and members have a clear understanding of financial position of the business and take assurance that it is being managed well in compliance with current legislation and best practice.
Undertake and present detailed analysis of sales and costs for operational decisions, for scrutiny and for budget and strategic planning purposes.
Write an analytical and informative Shop Manager’s report each month highlighting trends, issues and successes.
Ensure full regulatory compliance and keep abreast of regulatory changes
Attend monthly evening Committee meetings online or in person
Carry out any other reasonable duties that may be required. Daily shop duties will be require lifting and moving of light, medium and heavy stock on a daily basis.

The Shop Manager is accountable for the day-to-day shop operations to the MC and Line Managed by the People Group, on their behalf.

Hours per week – 37.5 hours
Salary c. £31k (37.5 hours)
Working Pattern - (shop based, excepting agreed off-premises duties - see below) Dig In is a 7-day operation. The Shop Manager will work 5 days (potentially on a rota – to be discussed) including Saturdays as per other paid staff. Majority of time on rota on shop floor alongside staff and volunteers undertaking daily routines. Managerial tasks undertaken in shop office, on hand for staff and volunteer support.
Off-shop premises work, average of 2 hours per week to attend meetings (staff, MC, Subgroups, staff 1:1s)
Holidays - 28 days annual leave incl. of public/bank holidays
Employer Pension contribution - 3%
Dig-in Sick Pay policy: Full pay for up to 2 weeks per year
Notice Period - 3 Months
