Fitzjohns Community Food Project
Lewes
Posted: 5 May 2026
Deadline: 19 Jun 2026
Compensation: Voluntary
Unpaid Volunteer Part-time
Job description
Our Community Cafe has become a vital part of what we do at Fitzjohns Community Food. Each week we make a delicious & nutrious hot meal for between 60-70 people. We have been told how much our members look forward to the meal, how it's the highlight of their week and for some we know it's the only hot meal they will have all day. For others, the only hot meal they have all week if they're experiencing homelessness or unsuitable housing such as temperary accomodation.
It's not just the hot meal but the warm friendly smile from the volunteers that makes people feel welcomed and valued.
The Community Cafe is open on Mondays only at the moment. We are looking for a Session Leader who would be comfortable, with a bit of training, to lead a small team of volunteers to cook the main meal in the morning, ready for the afternoon session.
If you can't do Mondays but could do other days, please get in touch as we have some other cooking sessions starting up this year.
This role would suit someone who has a bit of experience in the catering industry or is used to cooking large batches of food for big groups of people. But don't worry, we do a lot of learning as we go and we have a Community Cafe Coordinator (staff member) who is on hand to help you learn the ropes. So maybe you're passionate about cooking and confident enough to give it a try?
Whilst this is a voluntary role there are some great benefits, including enjoying the delicious food, being part of an amazing team of volunteers, supporting the community, and lots of free training that can upskill and build your CV. There are occassionally paid opportunities that come up too!
