Grower - Wedmore Farm Charity

About Us:

Wedmore Farm is a five-acre community farm and food charity based in Wedmore, Somerset.

Operating on a regenerative farming system, we run a thriving market garden that produces food for our own on-farm events in our Pack House Kitchen and a local veg box scheme.

Importantly, our market garden forms the centrepiece of our “Farm to Fork” food education programme with local schools and colleges.

What the Role Involves:

Working with our existing team, this is a hands-on role involving all stages of vegetable production, from propagation through to harvest and post-harvest tasks.

The ideal candidate will have experience of working in a commercial market garden and ideally running a veg box scheme.

We are looking for somebody to join our team asap.

Key parts of the role will include:

  • Planning and prioritising weekly tasks.
  • Supervising and working alongside volunteers.
  • Propagating, bed preparation, planting, weeding, and watering.
  • Harvesting and processing produce to our high quality-control standards and packing individual veg bags.
  • Support our general manager/chair in relevant meetings with grant providers & sponsors and assist in sales and marketing activities for the market garden. 

Key Details:

Hours: Up to 32 hours,4 days per week.

Pay: £18.00 per hour, this role is a freelance, self-employed position. You will be responsible for declaring this work to HMRC. You will raise a monthly invoice to the farm charity for payment via BACS.   

Reporting: This role will report to our Chair/ General Manager.

Location: On-site at Wedmore Farm, Plud Street, Wedmore, Somerset BS28 4BH.

 

Attributes & Skills we are looking for:

  • A passion for growing and eating good food.
  • A straightforward, honest personality and a team player willing to get stick-in and help-out.
  • At least 2-year’s experience in vegetable production/market gardening, ideally including a veg box scheme
  • Good knowledge of plants, pests, diseases, and chemical-free growing principles
  • Practical, hard-working mindset, with the willingness to work outside in all weathers.
  • Experience of managing others to assist in the market garden and with harvesting, including our hardworking team of volunteers.
  • Due to our charity working with school children, you MUST have/ be willing to get an Enhanced DBS Check. This requirement is non negotiable. However, we will reinburse you the full cost of this if you need to apply for a DBS Check.
  • Full UK driving licence & access to your own vehicle.
