Job description

Community gardener - Sunday sessions

June/July - December 2026

Temporary role, 1 day/week

Weekly Sunday sessions

£175 per day

We are looking for 1-2 people who can share the role, rotated on different Sundays.

We are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion, and welcome applicants from everyone, regardless of background. You might not fit all the criteria - we are looking for either one person or a small pool of people who can work alternate Sundays, so different skill sets are welcome if you think they will support the role. If interested, please also consider applying for our Community Gardener food growing lead role.

About us

Led by a voluntary committee,  we run a thriving community garden in Peckham at the east end of Burgess Park. Permaculture is an influence, as are other regenerative and climate resilient models of organic horticulture and growing, it’s ongoing learning and we are already managing a forest garden and hugelkultur.  Ponds, bees and chickens complement the project. A resource for local people, we hold open days, events, courses, workshops and more with an aim to get everyone involved. Learning and growing food are at the heart of what we do , and we hope to grow more, share more and diversify what we can grow in ever hotter summers.

Our Sunday sessions are well attended and cover the wide range of work that is required to keep the garden functioning - from carpentry to food growing, garden maintenance and general tidying, sign making, repairs and anything else that may be needed on the day.

The role

We are looking for enthusiastic, experienced and hands-on community gardeners with solid practical experience in food growing, carpentry, garden maintenance etc who will lead a weekly volunteer session that focuses on more general garden tasks that are needed to ensure the garden is safe and kept in good condition. The role is supported by garden Hosts - volunteers who formerly ran these sessions and have a good understanding of needs of the site.

The job is mostly site based, and you’ll be supported by the GWG Committee and volunteers.

Tasks include;

  • Planning and preparation of Sunday sessions as required. Planning and prep time to be managed at your discretion in discussion with the committee. Day rate will also include prep time, setting up and packing down.
  • Coordinate/facilitate a weekly 4 hour volunteer session at the garden with support of garden Hosts, delegating a wide range of tasks to drop in volunteers
  • Monitor attendance and tasks accomplished each week, sharing weekly updates with our wider volunteer community to let them know what can be done at other weekly sessions we run.
  • Risk assess, and ensure sessions are safe and accessible
  • Attend quarterly garden planning meetings
