Role based at: Meadows Community Centre, 299 Arbury Rd, Arbury, Cambridge CB4 2JL

Help us build something bigger than a café.

The Arbury Social will open its doors this summer- as a welcoming neighbourhood café and community hub in the heart of Arbury. We're looking for an enthusiastic, people-focused Community Café Assistant (Front of House & Kitchen) to join our team and help bring this exciting new space to life.

This isn't your average café role.

You'll be one of the friendly faces that makes people want to come back. Whether you're greeting customers, chatting with regulars, supporting volunteers, serving great coffee, or preparing delicious lunches/ catering orders from surplus ingredients and locally grown vegetables, you'll help create a space where everyone feels welcome.

At Cambridge Sustainable Food, we believe good food can change lives, strengthen communities and protect the planet. The Arbury Social will be a place where healthy food is affordable, food waste is reduced, and people can connect with their neighbours over great food and conversation.

We're looking for someone who shares those values and enjoys working in a fast-moving, community-focused environment.

You'll love this role if you…

• Enjoy meeting and working with people from all walks of life

• Naturally make people feel welcome and included • Believe food should be accessible, sustainable and affordable for everyone

• Enjoy cooking fresh, simple food using seasonal and surplus ingredients

• Like supporting volunteers and helping people build confidence

• Are happy moving between customer service, food preparation and community activities

• Want to be part of something that makes a real difference locally.

What you'll be doing:

• Providing exceptional customer service and creating a welcoming atmosphere

• Serving food and drinks and operating the till

• Building positive relationships with customers, volunteers and community groups

• Preparing fresh café food as well as catering orders, including soups, salads, tarts, cakes and light lunches

• Making creative use of surplus food and locally sourced produce

• Supporting volunteers and helping them feel valued and included

• Maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness, food hygiene and safety

• Supporting community events, activities and café initiatives

• Helping create a café where families, individuals, workers and community groups all feel at home.

What we're looking for:

• Experience in hospitality, catering, retail or customer service

• Excellent communication and people skills

• A passion for sustainability, food and community

• Confidence working independently and as part of a team

• A flexible and positive attitude

• Understanding of food hygiene and safe working practices

• Experience working with volunteers or community groups is desirable but not essential.

Why join us?

Because you'll be helping create a café that means something.

Local people told us they wanted affordable food, welcoming staff, a friendly atmosphere and a community hub where everyone belongs. You'll play a central role in making that vision a reality.

Come and help us turn surplus food into great meals, strangers into neighbours, and a café into a community hub.
