Job description

Join Our New Community Composting Team!

Calthorpe Community Garden is seeking nine enthusiastic volunteers to help us maintain and upgrade our compost operations.

Thanks to recent funding, we have recently built nine new compost bays and acquired a hot bin. We now need help to make the most of our increased food waste capacity and our brand new bays for garden waste. We are keen as well to keep improving our residents compost scheme to increase participation and engagement and explore how it can be of greater benefit to the local community.

If you are passionate about sustainabilityclosed-loop practices, and making a real impact in your community, we would love to hear from you.

What you'll do:

  • Assist with daily composting operations (Mondays 10am to 12pm - potentially moving to Sundays soon - Wednesdays 12.30pm to 2.30pm and Fridays 10am to 12pm) This involves:
    • processing food waste and garden waste
    • keeping record of food waste diverted from landfill and compost produced
    • Collect kitchen caddies from local cafes
    • Turning compost piles and other composting tasks
  • Support community engagement with our local residents compost scheme
  • Improve current compost systems: signage, repairs, etc.
  • Take part in bimonthly weekly socials to check in, chat about how things are going, and collaborate on new ideas or changes we want to implement.

What you'll gain:

In-depth, hands-on knowledge of how to set up and run every kind of composting system, from traditional bays to Bokashi and wormeries and how these systems can work in a community setting. You will get the chance to influence and actively partake in the improvement of our composting systems.

Commitment:

3 to 6 hours per week, depending on your availability
