Job description

Street Trees for Living (STfL) is looking for three experienced trustees to join our growing charity. We believe planting trees is one of the most meaningful  and long-lasting acts anyone can do.

Our small and friendly board has a diversity of experience. Due to some retiring trustees, we are looking for 3 trustees with the specific following skills:

1 x fundraising

1 x HR

1 x community engagement

We are also looking for someone with the experience to take over as Chair in the near future, as our current chair has decided to stand down. The joint acting chairs are able to provide a full handover and ongoing support.

About STfL

STfL was launched in the London Borough of Lewisham in 2019 to help local communities work with the council to fund, plant and care for street trees. Our trees and our ambitions are growing: we now have an urban forest of 3500 trees in Lewisham’s streets, schools and beyond, with an incredible 95% survival rate.

We work closely with the council, and individual residents, schools and community groups, through our network of volunteers. Future plans will focus on areas of greatest need in Lewisham, raising money through grant applications and using our expertise in engaging communities in caring for trees.

Our mission is to create greener healthier spaces on people’s doorsteps. We want everyone to have the chance to reconnect with the natural world, as well as enhancing the urban landscape for future generations.

The role of the trustee

Our board meets online at least four times a year. We are a diverse group with a mix of skills from forestry to finance, providing governance and strategic leadership for our Executive Director and her management team.

This is a voluntary role, for someone with a passion for trees, communities and experience in how voluntary organisations work. Working alongside the other trustees, you’ll make decisions in line with STfL’s charitable objectives

Our commitment to the London Borough of Lewisham is essential to STfL, so we especially encourage candidates with a connection to our borough.

Time commitment

The Board meets four to six times a year. We currently meet virtually for two hours (18:30-20:30). Trustees need to allocate time outside of the meetings to read papers and take on ad hoc tasks and roles within sub-committees.

About you

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following experience, skills and passions:

Experience:

  • Experience of being a trustee

  • A good understanding of how charities operate and the issues they face

Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, able to disseminate ideas and information to all kinds of people

  • Confidence to share thoughts and ideas within meetings

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other board members, staff, contractors and volunteers.

Passion:

  • Absolutely committed to increasing the tree canopy in London

  • Enthusiastic about engaging with the community to achieve success

  • Driven to deliver access to trees for everyone.
