Job description

Volunteer position on Trustee Board for Fitzjohns Community Food

Are you passionate about tackling poverty and food insecurity? Do you want to support people and communities through challenging times? Do you have experience in finance, accounting, or bookkeeping?

Fitzjohns Community Food is looking for a new Treasurer-Trustee to help oversee our finances, help shape our strategic direction, and ensure we continue to fulfil our charitable mission.

Based in Lewes, we provide vital food support, signposting to other support services, and a welcoming café and social space for people experiencing hardship. With the rising cost of food, energy and other essentials, our work is more important than ever—and we need your help to keep it going.

What you'll do

As Treasurer-Trustee, you'll work closely with our staff and fellow trustees to:

  • Oversee the charity's finances and financial reporting.
  • Help the Board understand the charity's financial position and make informed decisions.
  • Ensure appropriate financial controls and governance are in place.
  • Support the preparation of annual accounts and the Charity Commission annual return.

You don't need previous trustee experience—we welcome people with fresh perspectives and will provide support and guidance. Experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping or financial management would be valuable.

Time commitment

The Board meets once every three months, usually in the afternoon.

In addition, the Treasurer role typically involves:

  • Around half a day in a typical week.
  • Around a day a week during the annual accounts process, preparation for the independent auditing, and completion of the Charity Commission return.

While the workload varies through the year, we aim to make the role manageable and well supported. If you're looking for a rewarding way to use your financial skills to make a real difference in your local community, we'd love to hear from you.
