Job description
The Purpose of Sustainable Food Systems Officer Role
A thriving local food economy depends on strong connections between producers and buyers, growers and land, and food businesses and the networks that can help them grow. This role exists to build and strengthen those connections across Monmouthshire, supporting producers, growers and food businesses to develop sustainable routes to market and contribute to a resilient local food system.
As a key member of Monmouthshire County Council's Sustainable Food Team, you will work alongside farmers, growers, food businesses and partners to map existing activity, identify opportunities, and support the development of farming clusters and horticultural production across the county.
Working closely with the Sustainable Food Projects Manager, you will support and connect local producers, growers and food businesses across Monmouthshire. Your primary responsibility will be to develop sustainable routes to market, support farming clusters and horticulture, and contribute to a thriving local food economy aligned with the ambitions of Monmouthshire's Local Food Strategy.
You will work closely with food producers, growers and food businesses to ensure their perspectives and experiences are reflected in discussions at Monmouthshire Food Partnership Steering Group meetings, contributing evidence and insight to inform partnership understanding and decision-making.
You will be joining a programme with established producer relationships and early-stage development work already underway, giving you the opportunity to build significantly on that foundation. This is an exciting time to join the Sustainable Food Team, and we particularly welcome applications from people with experience of working in rural, agricultural or food production environments.
This is a hybrid role, working from County Hall and across Monmouthshire in community and rural locations.
This is a fixed-term post until 31 March 2027, with the potential to be extended, subject to funding.
