Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION

RESTART Lives is a small London homelessness charity supporting homeless people to break the cycle of homelessness and move towards independent living, feeling more empowered, confident and resilient. We focus in particular on supporting our clients to take steps towards self-sufficiency via finding employment.

The chef will work in the kitchen of our Knightsbridge Drop In centre on Friday afternoons into Friday evening, cooking for 100-150 homeless people, creating meals such as pasta with ragu, vegetable and chickpea mild curry, rice, chicken and vegetables and other similar dishes alongside basic salad. We are open to changing our menu with the new chef’s input. The role will also include some kitchen prep and washing up. 

We receive donations from City Harvest and Nando’s of unused food based on our list of recipe requirements, but we also buy in our own ingredients so that we are able to plan to make sure each week will be a nutritious meal for all. We cater to halal and vegetarian dietary requirements.

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Experience - Minimum of one year professional experience as a chef used to catering to large numbers and cooking in quantity.

Knowledge - Knowledge of issues surrounding homelessness and / or employment of vulnerable adults - A good understanding of the implications of working with current and former homeless people or with vulnerable adults more generally  - A good understanding of nutrition

Skills - A person / service /customer centred approach - Cooking large quantities - Flexibility to change menu based on ingredients received (within reason) - Outstanding time management and prioritisation skills - Ability to work well with others and in a team

Personal Qualities - Emotional intelligence, resilience and initiative - Empathy with the Charity’s aims and objectives and a commitment to equality and diversity - Efficient and reliable working practices - Methodical and thorough - Self-motivated, innovative, pro-active
