Job description

Community Harvest Whetstone (CHW) is a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members' co-operative providing a fresh, seasonal vegetable share year-round to around 50 member households. We grow using regenerative and organic principles, building healthy soils, supporting biodiversity and strengthening our local community.

As Assistant Grower you will work as part of a small team responsible for planning, producing and harvesting a diverse range of vegetables throughout the year. This is a practical, physically demanding role requiring flexibility, initiative and a commitment to collaborative working.

 

THE ROLE

- Part time, fixed term: 20 hours per week

- Salary: Real Living Wage, £13.45 per hour

- Location: Community Harvest Whetstone field and polytunnels, Whetstone, Leicestershire

- Line manager: Hannah Watkins, Senior Grower

- Working pattern agreed on appointment; can include early, late and weekend hours

- Start date: ASAP

 

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

- Produce a diverse range of vegetables collaboratively with growers and volunteers, using regenerative and organic principles across field and polytunnel systems

- All aspects of crop production: sowing, transplanting, crop maintenance, irrigation, composting and fertility building, weed management, pest and disease monitoring, crop rotation and polytunnel management

- Work from the annual cropping plan; monitor crop performance and contribute to planning adjustments

- Harvest, wash and prepare vegetables for weekly distribution

- Operate machinery, including a tractor where suitably trained and experienced

- Attend growers' meetings and co-ordinate daily and weekly work programmes with the team

- Assist with maintenance of infrastructure, tools and growing areas

- Support community events, farm tours and shared community meals

 

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

- Experience of growing vegetables in a market garden, CSA, horticultural or similar setting

- Knowledge of agroecological, regenerative and/or organic growing principles

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and to adapt to seasonal demands and weather

- Willingness to work outdoors in a physically demanding role year-round

- Commitment to CSA values, safe working practices, and equality and inclusion
