Job description

Market Gardener Job Description

Day-to-day duties include all aspects of growing, from ground preparation, seeding, maintenance, harvesting, packing, weeding, seed saving, paperwork, marketing, and communicating with team members and relevant partners.

This is a physical role, often based outdoors throughout the seasons. Therefore the ideal candidate must be comfortable working in all weather conditions and be physically fit.

As the Market Gardener, some of the duties you will be involved in will include:

  • Propagation from seed and cuttings
  • Ground preparation
  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of crops
  • Planting and aftercare of crops
  • Harvesting, cleaning, and packing
  • Developing an annual crop plan
  • Maintaining required HACCP, Risk Assessment and Health & Safety records as required by standards and requirements
  • Providing suitable records to the Soil Association in line with their standards for 'organic' status.
  • Maintaining financial records of purchases for garden and polytunnel
  • Operating machinery (where required & if trained/certified to do so)

Key duties and responsibilities

Administration: Maintain records for budgeting, ordering, invoicing and communicating clearly with the team. Maintain all records from sowing and planting dates to crop records. Work with the accountant to create and update budgets year on year. Manage seed harvesting and seed ordering. Submit all invoices in a timely manner for reimbursement.

Crop planning: Develop crop plans based on input from Market Garden partner. Crop plans should be adaptable according to the weather, seed availability, and partner/chef's direction. Create sowing plans. Crop plans must be shared with team in a timely manner.

Logistics:  Manage order sheets, invoices, and stores of compost, seeds, harvesting stores and more. Assist in the preparation for delivery of vegetables to London, as well as coordinating the collection of vegetables by partners.

Growing: Manage all aspects of seed propagation, planting, bed preparation, weed management, pest and disease management (organic), crop care, irrigation, fertility, tool care, and harvesting.  Manage polytunnel soil health and growing, experience/understanding of composting.

Maintenance: Manage and repair irrigation systems, machinery and tools as needed. Manage polytunnel cleaning, repairs and maintenance.

Marketing: Work with SP principal to market the SP Limited Market Garden opportunity to potential partners. A strong ability to communicate with chefs and partners is essential. 

Essential Skills

At least 2 seasons of successful propagation experience and 3 seasons in a horticulture set up Proven experience working in a team and strong communication and coordination skills Confident in crop planning, seed ordering, and record keeping Knowledge and familiarity with diverse, seasonal produce, from a growing perspective Willingness to work in a physical, outdoors role Ability to work flexible hours during the main growing season Full, clean UK driving license and access to own vehicle due to rural location

Flexibility around weekend working is required

Ability to use the tractor and machinery

Open to feedback and coaching
